Vivid Vervet Alpha 1 Released

Jonathan Riddell, on behalf of the Ubuntu release team, announces the first alpha release of Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet. He informs us which flavors are taking part in this alpha release, where images can be downloaded from, and where bugs should be reported.

Regular Council Meeting for December 2014

The LoCo Council welcomes two new members, Bhavani Shankar and Nathan Haines, while also approving verification applications from the South African and Dutch community teams.

Iranian LoCo Team Release Party

The Iranian LoCo Team held a huge release party on December 11th for the 14.10 release. During this event they held the following workshops: Ubuntu 0 to 100, Ubuntu Server Setup and Installation and Ubuntu Security, and three seminars: Ubuntu & OpenStack, BigData and General talk and tablet giveaway.

Ubuntu Core, the leanest and most efficient version of Ubuntu for cloud deployments is now available in the Google Cloud Platform.

Truphone uses Juju to demo world’s first telecom solution in minutes

Canonical reports that in a partnership with Truphone, they "have demonstrated the world’s first provisioning and operation of a cloud-based IMS core and application server for a live voting service using the Truphone network."

Developer Innovation Contest launched with China Mobile

Canonical and China Mobile announce the Ubuntu Developer Innovation Contest which is open to University Students, independent developers and China’s Open Source Community. Contributors can submit Scopes and Apps (HTML5 and QML). The deadline for entries is 30th April 2015, finalists will be selected in June 2015.

Snappy Ubuntu Core now on AWS

Canonical writes that they are delighted to announce the availability of snappy Ubuntu Core on Amazon Web Services (AWS). They remind us of what "snappy" is, and embed a video of Mark Shuttleworth's initial release announcement in their post.

StackStorm joins the Charm Partner Programme

Canonical announces StackStorm as a new member of their Charm Partner Programme. They inform us that StackStorm is an operations automation software that enables users to define and share operational patterns from events and triggers through to actions taken in response.

GTK 3.14, Nautilus 3.14 Land In Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet [Quick Update]

Andrew of WebUpd8 informs us that GTK 3.14 has landed in Ubuntu 15.04, and that the default themes have been updated with GTK 3.14 support. He informs us of various applications that have already been updated and says that those that are still at version 3.12 will probably be updated by the time 15.04 is released in April 2015.

Bq Ubuntu Phone Launches In Europe This February

JoeDanger of OMG! Ubuntu! informs us that the first Ubuntu Phone, manufactured by Bq, will go on sale in the second week of February. He informs us that will be a repurposed version of the Aquaris e4.5 and unlike the version that developers have been downloading, will ship with a number of software differences.

Ubuntu 15.04 Alpha 1 For Its Various Flavors

Michael Larabel writes about the Ubuntu flavors that have participated in the alpha 1 release of Ubuntu 15.04. He notes that Ubuntu itself did not participate, comments on Kubuntu's intention to ship with Plasma 5, and reminds us of future dates in the release schedule.

Unity To Get An Option To Always Show The Menus [Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet]

Andrew of WebUpd8 informs us that Unity developer Marco Trevisan is working on some tweaks that include a fix for a three year old bug related to Unity's menus. He says that the option to always make menus visible hasn't yet landed but as Marco's branch has been proposed for merging he suspects that it will be available in Vivid soon.

Dedoimedo, in a more generic review than previous comparisons, looks at the best best Linux performer of 2014. Screenshots and brief details for the top five distributions lead to the announcement that the winner is Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

Ubuntu Systems Used in Slovakian Municipal Elections

Silviu Stahie of Softpedia writes that Ubuntu has been used in the Slovakian elections, explaining how Ubuntu was booted from a USB key and used only a few desktop applications. Silviu says: "The difficult economic times forced the public sector to look for alternatives to proprietary software that would provide the same kind of functionality for a fraction of the price. It's needless to say that they found much more than they wanted."
