BQ's new Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition – the smartphone that puts content and services at your fingertips

Canonical announces that the world's first Ubuntu phone will be available across Europe from BQ.com through a series of Flash Sales over the coming weeks. They advise that the dates and times of the sales will be announced, the carriers which will offer SIM bundles for buyers of the phone, and emphasize the use of scopes as a new way to "rapidly and visually access the most important digital life services – music, social, web, local services, photos etc – directly on the home screen."

Gustav H Meyer announces the new website as being up and running, thanking Raoul [Snyman] for his awesome contribution in a well documented project where anyone else can join in and improve the site. He points to the getting involved page, ending: "Oh and thanks to everyone else for hanging in there and keeping the ubuntu-za flag flying high."

Ubuntu Jam 2015 – Mauritius

Hacklog reports on the recent Ubuntu Jam which recently took place at the University of Mauritius by showing us some of the equipment used, and describing some of the activities undertaken.

Ubuntu-Maryland Bug Jam

Ron Swift reports that his Global Jam had great success with bugs that the group experienced with the Live DVD and tests ran in VMs being reported to their proper places. He also advises that both Ubuntu 15.04 and Lubuntu performed well in their tests.

Ubuntu Ohio UGJ 2015 Summary

Svetlana Belkin reports on the Ubuntu Ohio Global Jam that was held on IRC on 7th February. She tells us that all of the participants worked on bugs and provides some examples of what was accomplished by three of the attendees.

hSenid Mobile joins Canonical’s Charm Partner Programme

Canonical announces the addition of hSenid Mobile, a multi-national Telco Software Solutions provider, to the growing Charm Partner Programme. Artur Tyloch, Global Telco Program Lead at Canonical says, “hSenid have already demonstrated their commitment to Juju with the creation of their CTAP charm. We’re excited to continue working with them to add more valuable telco solutions to the charm portfolio.”

Fujitsu joins Ubuntu Certified Public Cloud

Canonical says it is delighted to welcome Fujitsu as its first Certified Public Cloud partner is Asia. As a Certified Public Cloud partner, Fujitsu will offer the latest Ubuntu images on the world’s most popular cloud operating system.

Mojo: Juju Service Orchestration distilled part 3

Tom Haddon walks through a service deployment using Mojo to help deploy Juju services. In the third part of the series, Tom gives a demonstration of how to deploy a service and check to make sure that it works correctly.

Vzzual join Charm Partner Programme

Canonical announces the addition Vzzual, which offers an automated image tagging (image understanding), image processing, image hosting and image cloud backup service, to their Charm Partner Programme. Richard Jelbert CEO of Vzzual said “Canonical’s Charm Partner Programme allows us to make best use of Canonical’s cloud orchestration tool, Juju, enabling instant integration and scaling at the click of a button."

Frank Booth writes "Here we go again! It's that time of the year when Lubuntu asks the community to contribute an artistic touch to the distribution." He links to the Flickr site where entries should be uploaded, advises the closing dates for submissions and voting, and adds that the top five wallpapers will be included in Lubuntu 15.04.

Ubuntu 14.04.2 release date (obviously) delayed

Adam Conrad apologizes for the poor communication regarding the release of Ubuntu 14.04.2 which has been delayed until 19th February after discussion with many stakeholders and some flavor leads. He says: "Again, very sorry for the poor communication leading up to this, but I think this is going to lead to better images and a better product shipped for everyone involved."

Snappy Ubuntu Core on Raspberry Pi 2

Canonical writes that Snappy Ubuntu Core is now available on the Raspberry Pi 2. According to Eben Upton, the founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation: “I am incredibly excited to have Snappy Ubuntu Core running on the Raspberry Pi 2. Ubuntu has been a key missing piece on our operating system support for the Raspberry Pi.”

Internet of Things: openHAB

Canonical shares the news that Ubuntu Snappy Core will make it possible to pre-package and distribute openHAB, a free software for individual smart home hubs, for a large variety of embedded platforms.

Internet of Things: CyberVision

Canonical announces a collaboration with Cybervision, the makers of Kaa. Kaa is a Internet of Things development solution that will work on top of Snappy Ubuntu to provide a middleware platform for IoT development.

Rolling release vs. fixed release Linux

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols of ZDNet discusses the implementation of the rolling release model used by distributions such as Arch Linux as opposed to the fixed release model used by Ubuntu. He concludes that rolling releases should only be deployed by experts but for everyone else, the extra stability of fixed-release distributions makes them the better choice.

Ubuntu vs. Fedora vs. openSUSE With An Intel Broadwell Ultrabook

Michael Larabel of Phoronix shares the benchmark results of tests between openSUSE Tumbleweed, Fedora 21, and Ubuntu 14.10/15.04 that were made on an IBM Thinkpad X1 Carbon. He says of the tests: "While the package versions aren't too different between the three distinct operating systems, the testing was done with the OS defaults." At the end of the article he links to a OpenBenchmarking.org test results file that contains full details.

First Ever Ubuntu Phone Unboxing Video Appears Online

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! tells us that we can expect to see a number of "unboxing videos" for the Bq Ubuntu phone to appear on line in the coming days. Embedded in Joey's post is the first such video to appear which was made by YouTuber Jordan Keyes.
