IoT: Canonical and GE’s FirstBuild Collaborate on Smart Refrigerator

Canonical announces FirstBuild's showcasing of ChillHub, a community generated smart refrigerator at the Ubuntu stand at the second annual Internet of Things on May 12th and 13th. They tell us that ChillHub is a refrigerator with USB ports and Wi-Fi connectivity, saying: “This is a first-of-its-kind platform that enables the development of new hardware products that can operate inside a cooled space.”

Brendan Perrine: A retrospective look on how I started with Lubuntu

Brendan Perrine looks back at his time using computers from starting with Windows Vista, switching to Lubuntu after rejecting Ubuntu, and dual booting with Windows 7. He finishes his post by recalling his joining of the #ubuntu channel on Freenode, testing and filing bugs against Ubuntu 14.04, and joining the Quality Team.

Charles Profitt: Ubuntu Trash Bug

Charles Profitt reminds us that Ubuntu has always had bugs but 15.04 is the first version that he will not upgrade to due to a minor bug that affects him many times each day. He says that when using the launcher trash icon and selecting “empty trash” a new file manager window opens, and that the bug bothers him so much that he will not upgrade.

Dustin Kirkland: Ubuntu: Make Wonderful Things Possible!

Dustin Kirkland recalls Mark Shuttleworth at a Canonical event in November 2006 as saying: "Ubuntu make wonderful things possible, for example, Linux appliance, with Ubuntu preinstalled, we call this -- the fridge!" Dustin says that that tongue-in-cheek parody in no longer a joke and tells us about the recent collaboration with GE Appliances and FirstBuild around a smart refrigerator.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-3.5 released

Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak announces the release of Ubuntu Touch OTA-3.5 which includes some hotfixes for important issues spotted in the last OTA. In his email, Łukasz links to a change-log, a list of bugs that have been fixed, and a detailed commit log.

Meizu launches the Ubuntu MX4 for Developers in China

Amrisha writes that in a first of a series of launches, Meizu has announced that the Ubuntu MX4, which will be sold across Europe soon, is immediately available to developers in China. She shows us some screenshots of scopes running on the phone, says that it’s easy for developers who have existing HTML5 apps running on Android and iOS to bring those to Ubuntu, and informs us that the device is to go on sale directly from Meizu’s website.

First drone with apps – Ubuntu Core Drone

Victor Mayoral from Erle Robotics, in a guest post, writes that with the support of Canonical, his company have been working hard to bring the first drone with apps to the market. He explains that drone apps are installed using any device with a browser connected to the drone.

IoT World: Canonical & Industry Leaders Drive IoT Commercialization

Canonical reminds us that they are collaborating with some of the world’s smartest technology brands, including GE’s FirstBuild, Acer, Microsoft and DataArt, to reveal a slew of new and innovative IoT devices; all built on ‘Snappy’ Ubuntu Core. They briefly look at the ChillHub, Acer's Build Your Own Cloud, and Microsoft's and DataArt's project where industrial predictive maintenance can be setup in minutes.

IoT World: Snappy for Whitebox Switches

Tom Callway writes that Penguin Computing are the first to ship network switches with snappy Ubuntu Core and their Arctica network control software. David Ingersoll of Penguin Computing says: "The pairing of Ubuntu Core and Arctica brings incredible features and value to the whitebox switch market."

Erle-Copter, Ubuntu Core Edition: the first drone with apps

Glyn Moody of Ars Technica reminds us that Ubuntu started on the desktop and server but in recent years has moved to the cloud, phones and now to drones. The Erie-Copter runs Snappy Ubuntu, its creation is thanks to the Dronecode project.

Ubuntu jumps into Internet of Things with Acer, GE, and Microsoft

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols for ZDNet writes that over the past few years focus has moved from the desktop and on to the IoT (Internet of Things). With development happening between Acer, DataArt, Microsoft, and Canonical. Past work included bringing Canonical’s Juju DevOps tools to Windows, and now work on a IoT industrial predictive maintenance solution.

Why Can't Ubuntu Play Well With Others?

Bruce Byfield of Datamation reminds us that over the past 10 years of Ubuntu Mark Shuttleworth has made calls for cooperation, including at the recent Ubuntu Online Summit. But with each call the community questions his motives. Bruce says that most of his calls created distrust within the community,and he now seems to just focus on getting his visions finished or in most cases “started” and done with his leadership.

HP Launch Ubuntu Laptops, PCs in Russia

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! writes that Canonical has announced that HP laptops and PCs pre-loaded with Ubuntu are to go on sale in Russia from the middle of May. He gives us a brief specification of the machines, advises that they are loaded with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and links to the site from where further information can be found and orders placed.
