Clarification on IP Rights Policy

Jane Silber writes: “We are updating our Intellectual Property Rights Policy to clarify the relationship between this policy and the licences of the constituent works in Ubuntu.” She quotes in full a paragraph that has been added to the policy, says that Canonical are proud to have chosen the GPL as their default licence, and thanks the Free Software Foundation and the Software Freedom Conservancy for their suggestions over the past year.

UbuContest 2015

Carla Sella announces the first UbuContest on behalf of Canonical, Ubucon Germany 2015 and the UbuContest 2015 team, and that contestants have until September 18th to build and publish their apps and scopes using the Ubuntu SDK and the Ubuntu platform. She informs us of the contest categories, the names of the judges, and that the prizes will include travel subsidies to Ubucon Germany 2015 and Ubuntu phones.

What’s new in OTA-5

Michael Zanetti shows us with the aid of screenshots some of the changes to be expected in OTA-5 which include screen rotation and an added sense for input devices to Unity. He says that some of the changes are a step towards convergence and that Unity will keep track of all attached devices such as mice and keyboards.

David Planella updates us on the work of Canonical’s Ubuntu Community Team over the past week which includes Ubuntu Global Jam preparation, the first ever Snappy Open House, and the creation of new core apps contributor pages.

Celebrate Ubuntu: China Hackathon

April Wang informs us that to celebrate the Developer Edition Ubuntu phone launch in China, Canonical organized a “celebrate Ubuntu” hackathon in Beijing. She says that the core of the hackathon was ideas and solutions for seven award categories. April shows us some of the winning entries and several photographs of the event.

The monochromatic makeover

Steph Wilson of Canonical’s Design team informs us that the monochromatic icons have been given a small facelift to be more elegant and consistent across the platform by incorporating the Suru language and font style. She lists the changes that have been made, and shows us some examples before and after the changes.

Ubuntu PC maker System76 abandons Flash, says it’s too dangerous

Jon Brodkin of Ars Technica details the decision by System76, an Ubuntu PC maker, to cease installing Adobe Flash on its laptops and desktops following the blacklisting of the vulnerable version of Flash by Firefox. He says that System76 is also recommending that their customers remove Flash from their systems.

Here Is Why The Linux 4.2 Kernel Is Messing Up On Some Ubuntu Systems

Michael Larabel of Phoronix says that the [Linux] 4.2 kernel is currently under development but Git code has had issues booting on some x86_64 systems. He explains the process he used to explore the problem, and the kernel flags causing issues on some systems.

UEFI Firmware Update Support To Be Backported To Ubuntu 15.04

Michael Larabel of Phoronix briefly outlines UEFI ESRT support (Linux 4.2 kernel) as a prerequisite for UEFI [firmware/capsule] upgrades. He explains that system level support is required before the user-space side can (and still is) being developed, and that it is being backported to the 15.04’s kernel.

Ubuntu Phone OTA-5 Brings New Features

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes that with OTA-5, the Ubuntu phone will finally have complete shell rotation support, the side-bar buttons will be usable in landscape mode and there is support for limiting apps to certain orientations. Michael also says that the initial support for tracking input devices such as mice and keyboards is a step towards Ubuntu’s convergence goals.

Top500 Supercomputers: 486 runs on Linux!

Manuel Jose of Tech Drive-In informs us that Ubuntu is the flavor of Linux that powers the world’s fastest Supercomputer which cost an estimated US$390 million. He says that it actually runs the Chinese derivative, Ubuntu Kylin, and tells us that out of the top 500 Supercomputers, 486 of them run Linux.

Canonical/Ubuntu Developers Start Looking At The Vulkan Graphics API

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes that Canonical’s developers working on the Mir display server have confirmed that they are starting to look at the Vulkan graphics API. He explains that although the API has not been made public, Canonical joined The Khronos Group to interact with their working groups to help Mir and indirectly, Wayland.

Ubuntu Daily Builds for 15.10 Are Back

Silviu Stahie of Softpedia notes that the Ubuntu 15.10 daily builds, which had been unavailable for over a month due to failing automated tests, are back. He confirms that it is now possible to download daily images and test the upcoming version of Ubuntu.
