Confirmed Proposed UOS [Ubuntu Online Summit] date

Alan Pope announces that, in the absence of any objections to the proposed dates, the next Ubuntu Online Summit will take place between Tuesday and Thursday, 3rd to 5th November 2015. He recommends that everyone gives some serious thought to the sessions that they would like to see as the next release will be an LTS. Alan also links to the Launchpad site where planning for the summit will start.

Kubuntu Council re-election results

Philip Muskovac announces that Aaron Honeycutt, Clay Weber, and Ovidiu-Florin Bogdan are now members of the Kubuntu Council, following the end of the nomination period. The new members will begin two-year terms, while the current members' terms will end in one year.

Ubuntu Wily release party in Florida

Aaron Honeycutt announces an Ubuntu 15.10 release party in Delray Beach, Florida. The Ubuntu Florida LoCo team will have demonstration hardware for Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives, including Ubuntu mobile devices.

Plasma 5.4.1 lands in Kubuntu Wily

Marco Parillo informs us that KDE Plasma 5.4.1 has landed in Kubuntu Wily. Plasma 5.4.1 is a bugfix release.

Didier Roche: Ubuntu Make 15.09.2 enables you to install Android SDK only.

Didier Roche recognizes Sebastian Schubert for his work implementing the Android SDK into Ubuntu Make. This allows users to install Android SDK as a stand-alone feature without having to also install the full Android Studio bundle. He also shows appreciation for Omer Sheikh for his work expanding the Ubuntu Make test suite and ensuring that Ubuntu Make correctly handles error codes.

Sujeevan Vijayakumaran: Interview with Ronnie Tucker about Full Circle Magazine

Sujeevan Vijayakumaran interviews Ronnie Tucker, the creator and founder of Full Circle Magazine, who talks about why he started the magazine, his motivation for continuing, and what the magazine generally covers. Ronnie confirms that he encourages readers to send in articles even if they are not native English speakers as proof-readers will “tweak” articles, and when asked if he is satisfied with the number of downloads and the amount of feedback, he jokes: “Never! I always want MORE! :)”

Svetlana Belkin follows up after one month of using Ubuntu on her mobile phone. She says that overall the experience is positive and that she has no plans to return to Android.

Falldown for Ubuntu Phone is here!

Riccardo Padovani announces Falldown: a new game for Ubuntu on mobile devices. Developed by Riccardo, Michał Prędotka, and Tyrel Parker; Falldown requires the user to tilt the device in order to change the path of a falling ball. He says that Falldown is licensed under the GPL version 3 and the code is available on Launchpad.

Erle-Spider, an Ubuntu-based drone with six legs, launches on Indiegogo

Glyn Moody of Ars Technica reports on the Indiegogo campaign for Erle-Spider, a six-legged drone running on Snappy Ubuntu Core. The Erle-Spider was originally conceived as a pipe inspection drone, before its creators realized the value of a drone with the ability to run complex applications. The campaign aims to raise $50,000 in total with stretch goals including an Android remote control app at $100,000 and a 5MP camera at $150,000.

Ubuntu Wily gaggle builds 15.10 beta beachhead

Scott Gilbertson of The Register reports that some Ubuntu flavors have released the beta of their 15.10 Wily Werewolf release. He says that significant changes include Kubuntu shipping with Plasma 5.4, and an extension manager for Ubuntu Mate’s default file manager - Caja.

Ubuntu Phone Is Now Available To Buy In India

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! informs us that Snapdeal is the first major international retailer to stock the Ubuntu Phone, both the BQ Aquaris E4.5 and E5. He gives us some specifications of similar Android models, their prices and compares them to similar phones from other manufacturers, noting that they are comparatively underpowered.

Ubuntu Convergence Demo: X Apps Running on Mir Display Server

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! reports a video of X11 applications running on Mir ranging from LibreOffice and Gedit to Firefox with OpenGL being used to render fish. The video also highlights the multitasking on larger screen devices.

Canonical Shows Legacy X11 Apps Running On Mir With Unity 8

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes that Ubuntu developers continue making progress on supporting legacy X11 applications on Mir. Canonical posted a video showing the state of running a legacy X11 application within Unity 8.

Ubuntu Snappy Core and Raspberry Pi 2 Powered Mycroft Device Successfully Funded

Marius Nestor of Softpedia reports that Mycroft has raised more than $100,000 in less than a month on Kickstarter. The estimated shipping date is the summer of 2016.

Ubuntu Desktop Lead Working to Get New Important Feature for Disabled Users

Silviu Stahie of Softpedia writes that Will Cooke, the leader of Ubuntu’s desktop flavor, is working to make sure that Ubuntu has much better accessibility support. Silviu says that it’s nice to see people working on accessibility features rather than “a new scrollbar or some shiny new features”, and quotes Will as saying: “If anyone has expertise in this area please get in touch with me will.cooke@canonical.com We've got a few ideas to try from the G+ post, but if you want to help please drop me a line.”

Canonical Video Showcases Scopes Interface Feature for Ubuntu Phones

Christopher Tozzi, The VAR Guy, writes that Canonical has released a video highlighting the benefits of Scopes in Unity. Christopher describes scopes as “a cool, forward-thinking feature”, but cautions that whether they will be a success has yet to be seen.
