Ubuntu Online Summit Concludes

In preparation for Xenial Xerus, which will become the 16.04 Ubuntu LTS release next spring, an Ubuntu Online Summit was held from November 3 - 5, 2015. The event was highlighted with a keynote from Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth, a Q&A with Canonical CEO Jane Silber and a wrap up session with key take aways from the track leads.

Ubuntu Online Summit Intro and Mark Shuttleworth's Opening Keynote

David Planella introduces the opening session of the online summit in which Mark Shuttleworth presents his opening keynote. Mark talks about the next (LTS) release, convergence, "Things", snappy Ubuntu, the cloud environment and Juju. Mark also thanks the outgoing Community Council for they work they have done, explains the meaning of Xenial, and answers questions that are put to him on IRC.

Ask the CEO: Jane Silber's Q&A

David Planella introduces a Q&A session in which Jane Silber answers questions which are put to her on IRC. Jane talks about a wide range of subjects which include her thoughts on the Ubuntu phone, Unity 8, and her advice for young students who want to work with open-source software.

Scarlett Clark: Kubuntu: KDE 4.14.3 Bugfix release for Trusty is now available.

Scarlett Clark of Kubuntu announces that the KDE 4.14.3 release for Trusty is ready in the Trusty PPA and invites people to join #kubuntu-devel to advise her of any problems. She concludes with a link to her Patreon account which helps pay for some of her development work on Kubuntu.

Dustin Kirkland: LXD in the Sky with Diamonds

Dustin Kirkland informs us that "LXD has been promoted to the Ubuntu Main archive, now commercially supported by Canonical." The package is available for Ubuntu 15.10 and has been backported to 14.04. According to Dustin Kirkland "every Ubuntu server [...] is now a full machine container hypervisor, capable of hosting hundreds of machine containers, right out of the box!"

Chuck Short: An nclxd update in Ubuntu 15.10

Chuck Short shares the various changes included in nclxd, the OpenStack Nova plugin for LXD, Canonical's container hypervisor. Changes include:

  • stop/start/reboot/terminate container
  • Attach/detach network interface
  • Create container snapshot
  • instance migration
  • firewall support

He concludes by explaining that the “LTS release we will focusing on scale and making it production ready.”

Elizabeth K. Joseph: A werewolf SVG and a xerus

Elizabeth K. Joseph shares a link to the werewolf SVG image file that has been made available by Tom Macfarlane of the Canonical Design Team and the pronunciation of “xerus,” the animal featured in the 16.04 code name Xenial Xerus.

DJI launches most-powerful computer for drones – on Ubuntu

On November 2nd, Canonical’s Insights blog announced “DJI, the world leader in creative aerial technology, today announced the launch of the DJI Manifold, a high-performance embedded computer designed specifically to fly.“ They went on the explain that it runs on Ubuntu 14.04 with an Onboard SDK (Software Development Kit), “enabling developers to create more powerful professional applications for use with aerial technology.” The post continues by sharing some of the hardware specifications and a link to where it can be purchased globally directly from DJI’s online store.

In a press release on November 5th: “Canonical today released in beta the world’s fastest hypervisor, LXD, which takes a pure-container approach to Linux virtualization and offers dramatic performance and density advantages over VMware ESX and Linux KVM for private and public cloud infrastructure.” The release continues with details about Canonical and the some technical details about the release of LXD in Ubuntu 15.10.

Mark Shuttleworth Kicks Off Ubuntu 16.04 Development Discussions

Michael Larabel of Phoronix shares some of the focuses from the nearly hour long keynote from Mark Shuttleworth that began the 16.04 online summit. He shares that the focuses included: “reiterating that Ubuntu 16.04 is a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, work is ongoing towards the Ubuntu convergence goals and they are making progress, and also talk of Ubuntu in other areas like drones.” Michael also mentions Mark’s comments about snappy, and along with the keynote, includes a recent Unity 8 convergence "show and tell" video at the end of the article.

Ubuntu Touch on More Phones Would Be a Mistake Right Now, Says Mark Shuttleworth

Inside Canonical: the creators of Ubuntu have big plans for the future

Barry Collins of Alphr does an exploration of Canonical’s work beyond the Ubuntu desktop for the uninitiated. He talks about how Ubuntu server is what many cloud companies have “built their cloud businesses on,“ Canonical’s “bet” on the Internet of Things, apps and the “adaptable” developers working in squads to tackle tasks together.

Kubuntu Developers Planning Improvements For 16.04 Xenial

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes about a session at the Ubuntu Online Summit for Kubuntu developers where they discussed: “build server changes, possible fundraising work to help Kubuntu developers, improvements to documentation, look towards KDE Plasma 5.5 integration, improve the bug triaging process, and making other enhancements.” He concludes by embedding the video of the planning session in the article.

Ubuntu Software Centre To Be Replaced in 16.04 LTS

Sam Tran of OMG! Ubuntu! reports on plans announced at the recent Ubuntu Online Summit to move away from the Ubuntu Software Centre, in favor of GNOME’s Software application. He shares a screenshot of the application and quotes from Will Cooke at the summit about the changes.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Unity 7 to Support Snappy Packages

Silviu Stahie of Softpedia writes on the upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. He says that Unity 7 will be the the default desktop environment for 16.04 but Unity 8 desktop will be offered as an alternative until it becomes stable enough. Silviu adds that Canonical wants to adopt Snappy packages for the regular Ubuntu distro, not just the phone.
