Xenial Xerus Beta 1

Flocculant, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, announces the first beta of the Xenial Xerus, which is the upcoming 16.04 LTS release. He informs us of the flavors and versions that have participated in the release: Lubuntu, Ubuntu Cloud, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu. He goes on to explain where to download the images and suggests that those interested in following the development of the release subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce mailing list.

Mobile World Congress 2016, Day 1, 2, 3, and 4 Recaps

Bill Bauman recaps all four days of Mobile World Congress. He summarizes several keynotes, devices, and the Ubuntu stand. He notes that Canonical received the Best of Show award for the BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Tablet. He also talks a bit about Big Data and how it impacts mobile providers.

Jonathan Riddell: KDE neon Comes Alive!

Jonathan Riddell, from the KDE Neon team, announces the arrival of the Developer Unstable archive for KDE Neon. Riddell states, “This gives daily packages of KDE Frameworks and Plasma desktop built direct from Git master branches. Expect some breakage, it’s called unstable for a reason.” He summarizes installation instructions for Ubuntu Wily systems.

Canonical Design Team: Designing for convergence

Jouni Helminen from the Canonical Design Team shows us the status of Unity 8/Ubuntu Touch and some default apps. He shows some screenshots of these apps and some features and design implementations. He invites anyone with questions to contact him.

Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition available for pre-order now!

Canonical writes that the Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu edition is now available for pre-order from Meizu. The phone costs $369.99 USD and was showcased for the first time at Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona. “The Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition is the fifth Ubuntu device and the second joint launch between Canonical and Meizu in the last twelve months.”

Ubuntu Touch OTA-9.1 released

Łukasz Zemczak announces the release of Ubuntu Touch OTA-9.1, a bugfix release. “As always with hotfix releases, not too many user-visible changes - OTA-10 will bring us all the tasty goodies instead.” He links to the release notes and thanks everybody involved in this release.

MWC 2016: Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition hands-on review

Carly Page from The Inquirer provides an in-depth review of the Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition. She starts off by reviewing the design which “feels like a premium device in the hand and, if it's priced below £400, could be one of the most expensive-looking smartphones in its league.” She then summarizes the display, software, performance, and camera which “proved decent during our brief time with it, and managed to capture images full of detail and natural colour even under the harsh lighting of Canonical's stand.” She concludes by sharing her positive thoughts on how it will do in the market.

Has open source hell frozen over?

Bryan Lunduke gives his views on Ubuntu’s convergence. “First, the “convergence” vision actually appears to be reaching a point where it is usable [...] this is a big freaking deal.” He expresses his amazement for some of the minor Ubuntu Touch gems, including, “The phone, when docked to a monitor, even becomes an input device; You can use it as a touchpad mouse and a virtual keyboard.”

Mir 0.20 Ships With Screencasting To Virtual Output Support

Canonical chooses Linux-friendly Dragonboard 410c as Ubuntu Core on ARM 64-bit reference

Brian Fagioli from Beta News highlights Canonical’s announcement of the Dragonboard 410c being recognized as a development board for Ubuntu Core. "This will be the very first ARM-based 64-bit development board and SoC available for Ubuntu Core, offering makers and Internet of Things (IoT) innovators an affordable, powerful yet flexible development environment, which can scale from ARM-based servers to embedded solutions. This offering builds on the DragonBoard 410c positioning as a standardised development board for the ARM ecosystem under the umbrella of Linaro’s open source 96Boards program"

Ubuntu Community Team Q&A - 23rd February 2016

Mark Shuttleworth Talks "The Internet of Revenue Generating Things" at 4YFN 2016

Marius Nestor of Softpedia reports and shares a video of Mark Shuttleworth, who gives a talk at Mobile World Congress 2016 about the Internet of Things and the impact it has on the world of technology.
