Yakkety Yak Alpha 2 Released

Simon Quigley announces the second alpha release of Yakkety Yak. Developers are encouraged to assist in testing and reporting bugs so that the release may move out of the alpha stage. Included in the article are links to download flavor variants of this alpha release.

Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) End of Life reached on July 28 2016

Adam Conrad announces that Ubuntu 15.10 reached the end of its nine month cycle on July 28th. This means that this release will no longer be supported and that no further package updates will be accepted. Adam also provides a link to a tutorial for upgrading to the most recent LTS Ubuntu release.

Shih-Yuan Lee blogs about recent Secure Boot enhancements found in the latest Ubuntu kernel updates. Shih-Yuan shows us how to disable Secure Boot using shim-signed (secure boot chain-loading bootloader), change the BIOS, and finally re-enable Secure Boot.

Elizabeth K. Joseph: The Official Ubuntu Book, 9th Edition released!

Elizabeth K. Joseph tells us about her work with the newly released 9th edition of Official Ubuntu Book. She discusses challenges in ensuring the book is future-proof and would be correct for two years, the new chapter on “Ubuntu, Convergence, and Devices of the Future,” and thanks her co-authors and contributors who helped with this edition of the book.

Canonical Design Team: New starter Raul (UX designer) – “I want to challenge myself to do the most difficult things”

Steph Wilson of Ubuntu Design introduces Raul Alvarez, a new member of the design team working on the Ubuntu convergence story. Steph asks Raul some questions so we can get to know him, including projects he’s worked on, what attracted him to Ubuntu and open source, and what UX means to him.

Canonical Design Team: Developing for Vanilla v1

Barry McGee of Ubuntu Design reminds us that Vanilla v1 is scheduled for an early September 2016 release. Vanilla was created over a year ago, and currently averages 1500 downloads a month. Barry outlines what needs to be done between now and the forthcoming major September release.

The Document Foundation welcomes Canonical to the project Advisory Board

The Document Foundation announces that Canonical has joined the TDF projects Advisory Board. Canonical has been an active member since the early days of the TDF, frequently sponsoring the LibreOffice Conference, and it is hoped Canonical will aid the presence of free software (including LibreOffice) inside enterprise and government organizations.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-12 released

Łukasz Zemczak announces the release of OTA-12 to the stable channel for Ubuntu Touch. He writes, “We have just copied all OTA-12 images to the stable channels and started the phased upgrade procedures as with every release. This should take less then a whole day and all users should see the update on their phones tomorrow at latest.”

Forbes contributor Marco Chiappetta writes about the Windows 10 offers and talks about Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows. He writes, “If you’re open to the idea of experimenting with Linux, Ubuntu is an easy recommendation. Ubuntu is one of the more user friendly Linux distributions currently available, of which there are many.”
