Cosmic Cuttlefish (18.10) Beta Freeze
Adam Conrad, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, announces that Cosmic is now in Beta Freeze. In the feature freeze all new packages will be screened through bot action prior to acceptance into the archive. With the proposed-migration complete, the new test images will be made available for all flavors and the bug hunting season is open.

Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) Beta released
Adam Conrad, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, announces the Beta release of 18.10 for all flavors. Any and all bugs discovered should be reported via the given link. Adam gives a brief overview of the Ubuntu eco system and what you can expect in each flavor with links to where the respective images can be downloaded.

Mir News: 28th September 2018
Alan Griffiths (alan_g) reports this week's events where the focus has been on IoT support and documentation updates. He advises on the state of availability, who is working on what components, and gives a brief description of Mir to dispel recent confusion about it. Alan cautions that libmirclient is deprecated and that apps should be written to support Wayland.

Nathan Haines announces the community wallpapers to be included in Ubuntu 18.10. Twelve are selected, and a link is provided to all images submitted. Nathan extends congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who submitted. The new wallpapers will be available upon upgrade or install of Ubuntu 18.10 on October 18th.

Ubuntu 18.10’s New Wallpaper is Cosmically Cute
Joey Sneddon presents the default desktop background of the coming Ubuntu version, featuring a “lavish line-art mascot” on a backdrop of deepsea purple. The wallpaper, in color and grayscale, is available for download and will soon be in the software repository. Joey also gives a link to all the past release wallpapers.

KDE Plasma 5.12.7 LTS Desktop Environment Released with 65 Changes, Update Now
Marius Nestor writes of the seventh point release of the KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS desktop environment, which updates many of the major components, enhances support for peripherals, and adds new modules. Marius gives a roadmap of the future point releases, recommending all users on the LTS version to update.
GNOME 3.30 Desktop Gets First Point Release, It's Now Ready for Mass Deployments
Marius Nestor informs us of the first point release of the GNOME 3.30 desktop environment, containing many improvements, bug fixes, and updated translations. He notes that one bug fix did not make it into the release due to timing, and links to the patches. Marius recommends that all users update as soon as the packages are in the software repositories.
LibreOffice 6.1.2 Open-Source Office Suite Lands with 70 Bug Fixes, Download Now
Marius Nestor tells us that during the LibreOffice Conference 2018 held in Tirana, Albania, the Document Foundation announced the second point release of the 6.1 series, containing 70 bug fixes. A full changelog link is provided, with users of the series urged to update - enterprise users are advised to use the more stable and well-tested 6.0 series. LibreOffice 6.1.3 is expected end of October 2018, the same time 6.0.7 should land.
Mesa 18.2.1 Going Into Ubuntu 18.10 For Fresh Open-Source GPU Drivers
Michael Larabel reports that it looks like Mesa 18.2.1 will get a feature freeze exception and thus be included in Ubuntu 18.10. He believes 18.2 is a big update containing loads of new features and support for new graphics hardware. Michael found it “nerve-racking” seeing it missing from 18.10.

Microsoft killing off the old Skype client… for real this time
Peter Bright reminds us that Microsoft announced back in July 2018 that they were ending support for their 'classic' Skype client which caused a community backlash. Its life was extended but now support ends in November. The newer client is the same for all platforms thus reducing development costs, with a warning that Skype network protocols may change, preventing the old client from working at all.
