Mir News: 2nd of November 2018
Chris Halse Rogers (raof) advises that with interface changes in client 3D support we might soon see Mir running under Unity8 on NVIDIA hardware. Work continues on CL and musl, but even with fixes there are some build failures when building Mir against musl. Finally is confirmation that Vulcan works on Mir servers.

Xubuntu Development Update November 2018
Sean M. Davis reports on the many Xubuntu Development Updates made over the last two months. Sean notes nine changes for Xubuntu 18.10, six new new GTK+ 3 Xfce components, two major bug fixes pushed to users via SRU, and five app releases for September and eight for October. The Xfce 4.14 roadmap has been cleaned and updated, and now looks approximately 83% complete. All help is welcome, with a link provided for the Xfce Contribute page if you're willing, plus links to “Disco Dingo” development and Xubuntu development mailing list.

Xfce Screensaver 0.1.1 Released
Sean M. Davis reports on Xfce Screensaver's second alpha release that is available for testing. He writes “this release is a big step forward for the newest Xfce application.” The details include added features, bug fixes, new translations, and single release packaging. Screenshots of the numerous enhancements are provided and a link to the download.

Disco Dingo: The development cycle has started!
Simon Quigley (tsimonq2) reports the development cycle has started and links to the downloads page for the daily image. While work continues to prepare the opening of the archive, cleanup of some 18.10 bugs and added polish is still in progress. Simon welcomes more help and links to how to contribute to Lubuntu.

IBM Inks $34 Billion Deal to Buy Red Hat
Joey Sneddon shares his insight in IBM's buy of Red Hat - in the quotes from both enterprises. He emphasizes IBM becoming the single largest hybrid cloud provider and notes that Red Hat will continue to be Red Hat - no changes are expected. The deal is expected to be completed in mid 2019, pending boards' and regulatory approvals. A link is provided to the IBM press announcement.

Ubuntu 19.04 Named ‘Disco Dingo’
Joey Sneddon reveals Ubuntu 19.04's next release code name as "Disco Dingo", set for release in April 2019. Though no formal announcement has come from Mark Shuttleworth yet, the name was gleaned from launchpad. Joey explores some etymology on disco and dingo, illuminating the name that no one had guessed from last month's editorial.

PipeWire Is Still On Track For One Day Being A Drop-In Replacement To PulseAudio
Michael Larabel updates us on PipeWire; a drop-in replacement for PulseAudio as well as JACK. Whilst progress is being made, it's not ready yet as there are still some gaps in functionality that Michael lists, noting it's unclear when it will be ready; but likely will be seen first in Fedora. Canonical Outs Linux Kernel Patch for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to Fix 4 Security Flaws
Marius Nestor reports on the kernel patch that addresses CVE-2018-14734, CVE-2018-16658, CVE-2018-9363, and CVE-2018-10938. These vulnerabilities only effect the original 4.4 kernel series, across all distributions. Those running 16.04 with the 4.4 series kernel are advised to update and reboot the system.
Canonical Releases Kernel Security Update for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 8 Flaws Patched
Marius Nestor makes the report of security updates for 14.04 LTS with the 3.13 kernel. The updates address four flaws: CVE-2015-8539, CVE-2017-15299, CVE-2017-18216, and CVE-2018-9518; a vulnerability: CVE-2016-7913; three race conditions: CVE-2017-0794, CVE-2018-1000004, and CVE-2018-7566. In addition to updating and rebooting, you should also recompile any third-party modules that you might have installed. A link is provided to the security advisory for more details.
GNOME 3.30.2 Desktop Environment Released as the Last in the Series
Marius Nestor advises that the last planned point release of GNOME 3.30.2 Desktop Environment is available which includes various bug fixes and improvements. While the release will soon be in the software repository, Marius relates other means to install now. He also gives a look ahead for the spring 2019 release of GNOME 3.32.
GRUB Bootloader Now Supports Reading Disks With Btrfs RAID 5/6
Michael Larabel reports of the long term efforts to fix Btrfs file-system's native RAID 5/6 code. The support was merged today for Linux 4.16+ kernels, and the fixed code also supports recovering Btrfs RAID 5/6 on faulty disks. A link is provided to the change log.

Valve's Latest Steam Play Proton Beta Offers Up Useful Fixes
Michael Larabel writes that the beta Proton 3.16-4 offers some key improvements. Notably are the fixed corefonts and exposure in NVIDIA graphics to D3D games. Further, among the other improvements, updates, and fixes, there is better Steamworks compatibility. Michael advises he is open for test cases for Steam Play benchmarks, giving the metrics for games to be tested.

Ubuntu 19.04 "Disco Dingo" Daily Build ISOs Now Available to Download
Marius Nestor advises that the 19.04 ubuntu daily build ISO images are now available from Canonical's servers. Other flavors have yet to release their ISOs. This early in the development cycle there is nothing new, but we can look forward to GNOME 3.32 desktop environment and perhaps the 5.0 linux kernel. Maruis reiterates that this is very early development versions, do not install on production machines. The Ubuntu 19.04 beta will be released March 28, 2019. Screenshots of 19.04's desktop are provided.

Ubuntu Fan Aims to Simply Container Networking
Sean Michael Kerner makes us aware that Ubuntu is more than a desktop - Linux server - cloud technology effort. Here is shown the Ubuntu software-defined networking (SDN) offering, a different approach. Fan gives a simple ability to live migrate an IP address operating in container environments. The means is discussed as well a video link to the interview with Mark Shuttleworth is provided.
