Mir News: 9th of November 2018
Alan Griffiths (alan_g) reports of the continuing works on porting the MATE panel to Wayland and the Nvidia driver support. Unfortunately still not ready for prime time for release to Mir 1.1. Alan is excited to advise of an alternate to mir-kiosk in a new desktop snap that yields a more realistic “desktop” confinement, and that the portability of egmde desktop snap is improved and now supports other Ubuntu series as well as possibly other distributions.

Glmark2-wayland on qtmir-demo-shell on new NVIDIA-friendly platform interfaces
Chris Halse Rogers (raof) gives us an update on his efforts to integrate the Nvidia driver in Wayland. Here he advises on his efforts to make NVIDIA GL suitable for downstream shells as a replacement for the current renderer. Chris provides a link showing glmark2-wayland running against the qtmir-demo-shell.

Plasma 5.14.3 update for Cosmic backports PPA
The Kubuntu Team announces the 3rd bugfix release of Plasma 5.14. This release, along with KDE Frameworks 5.51, is available in the backports PPA for Cosmic 18.10 and directions are given to upgrade. As usual the caveat is that if stability is important, users should remain on Plasma 5.13.5. For those choosing to upgrade and experiencing any issues, links are provided for feedback and bug reporting.

KDE Connect 1.10 Released To Improve The Android Device Integration
Michael Larabel reports on KDE Connect 1.10 that bridges Android mobile devices to the KDE desktop. Among the enhancements are better support for Android Oreo, better mouse input handling, the media controller supports stopping playback, an improved settings screen, and SMS handling. Michael gives a hint that something "huge" is coming for SMS handling and advises that support for Android 4.0 and older is dropped. A link to the release announcement is provided for more details.

Apple's New Hardware With The T2 Security Chip Will Currently Block Linux From Booting
Michael Larabel denounces Apple's MacBook Pro laptops in incorporating the T2 security chip in the latest Mac Mini systems. Michael instructs on what the T2 chip is designed to do, basically prevent any other operating system from booting. There might be a workaround to disable the Secure Boot security to allow linux to boot, but, thus far has been ineffective.

Don’t Panic, You Can Boot Linux on Apple’s New Devices
Joey Sneddon recounts the function of the T2 security chip on Apple's new devices that, in its other measures, prevents booting any other operating system. Joey relays Apple's directive in order to disable the security feature.

LibreOffice 6.1.3 Open-Source Office Suite Released with 66 Bug Fixes
Marius Nestor writes of the LibreOffice suites: LibreOffice 6.0.7 and LibreOffice 6.1.3, where emphasis is placed on the LibreOffice 6.1.3 point release. Both have 66 bug fixes. All users are recommended to update their respective installation to the new versions as the LibreOffice 6.0 series will reach end of life support later this month. The download links are provided with the next major release, LibreOffice 6.2, expected in February 2019.
Linux Kernel 4.19 Gets First Point Release, It's Now Ready for Mass Deployments
Marius Nestor reports on the Long Term Support Linux Kernel 4.19's moderate updates, marking it as stable. 4.19 brings added wireless protocol support, a new I/O polling interface, a new I/O latency controller, EROFS (Enhanced Read-Only File System) support, and updated drivers as well as mitigations for several security issues. All long term users are recommended to adopt the Linux 4.19 kernel series and links are provided for the prefered install means.
GNOME's Mutter Finally Gets Meson Build System Support, Other Cleanups
Michael Larabel writes of the Meson build system support added to the GNOME desktop component, Mutter window manager / compositor. For the GNOME 3.32 cycle in the Mutter code cleanup and alterations, support for GLES1 and fixed pipeline are removed, Mutter builds without GLX or EGL support, and X11 requirements are updated. A link is given to the changelog with the expectation of a GNOME 3.32 stable release in March.

Mesa 18.3-RC1 Released As The Final 2018 Update Approaches
Michael Larabel informs us that the first release candidate for Mesa 18.3 is released. Mesa 18.3, in the many refinements and optimizations, features driver updates, added hardware support, and many Linux game / Steam Play improvements. We are advised the target date for Mesa 18.3.0 is late November. A change log of the feature developments is provided.

Ubuntu Linux On Samsung Galaxy Devices Finally Reaches Beta (Samsung DeX)
Michael Larabel reminds us that back in October 2017, Samsung announced convergence between Samsung Galaxy smartphones and traditional Linux. Samsung DeX is now in beta, and was on display at Samsung's Developer Conference. It is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, however is currently only in a private beta with more details provided via link.

KDE Applications 18.08 Reaches End of Life, KDE Apps 18.12 Launches December 13
Marius Nestor tells us that the KDE Project have released the third stability update to the KDE Applications 18.08 suite, which also marks the end-of-life of the series. Marius provides some highlights of KDE Applications 18.08.3 including the note that it includes 20 bug-fixes and improvements, providing a link to the full changelog. We are reminded, that if we use KDE apps 18.08 we should update to 18.08.3 as soon as possible. The next release 18.12 is still in development and expected on December 13.
KDE Frameworks 5.52 Released With KWayland Virtual Desktop Protocol, Spins Down Drives
Michael Larabel writes of the last monthly update for KDE Frameworks 5.52 that complements Qt5. Michael notes in these updates that there is support for the fuzzer sanitizer, security enhancements in KIO, KWayland virtual desktop in the KWin compositor, power control of disk drives, an icon fix in the Dolphin file manager, and syntax highlighting in CMake 3.13.
