Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan Ermine) released

Canonical announces that Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine has been released with many changes to the user experience, including GNOME 3.34, which has a significant performance improvement. Also, it is based on Linux 5.3 kernel with the toolchain of GCC 9.2 and glibc 2.30. It also introduces the recent innovations from open infrastructure projects like Kubernetes, OpenStack Train, etc. It is supported for 9 months for Ubuntu and all flavors.

Ubucon Europe 2019 | Sintra edition

In his Portuguese blog Marcos Alvarez Costales relates his experiences in the four day multi-national event. Marcos denotes the events he attended and notes those he led as well as the cultural activities in the evenings. Screenshots are provided of the events and the speakers; Marcos finalizes his reports as "another example that the best thing about Ubuntu is its community".

Grace Hopper Conference 2019

The Ubuntu blog tells us that 24 Canonical employees from various teams attended the Grace Hopper Celebration in Orlando Florida, promoting Canonical. With more than 26,000 people attending, we are given a brief history of the Grace Hopper Conference from its humble beginning. The author discusses the activities of this year’s Canonical booth, and other Conference sessions, all with numerous photos.

Stress testing CPU temperatures

Colin King helps educate us on stress testing CPU temperatures. Providing a study he made on various devices, from a r.pi.2 through to xeon cpus, he gives a very detailed table of how hot various cpu configurations got during 60 seconds of specific types of processing. Colin's conclusion from the detail provided in his study is there is no one way that can be used to stress test CPUs for all architectures, but stress-ng provides the flexibility, with its large suite of methods, to do it for you with the right choice.

Ubuntu 19.10 Promises an Improved Experience for AI/ML Developers

Jack Wallen conveys what a game changer the 19.10 release is on the desktop. In addition to the UI/UX improvements, the big changes are "under the hood". Jack tells us of ZFS, MicroK8s add-ons, Kubeflow, Kubernetes, and Train - Charmed OpenStack. All these, he explains, is in support for developers in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) and new edge computing capabilities.

KDE Plasma 5.17 Released With Wayland Improvements, Better HiDPI

Michael Larabel announces the release of KDE Plasma 5.17 with several Wayland improvements, better HiDPI support, faster start-up performance, slight RGB hinting for fonts, settings improvements, better Thunderbolt support, and more. Wayland users will notice a change about the fractional scaling for KWin.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Codenamed The Focal Fossa, Arriving On 23 April

Michael Larabel reports that the next release of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS has the codename "Focal Fossa" which will be arriving on 23 April. The development starts after a few weeks, and the release schedule is made. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS includes GNOME 3.36 as the default desktop environment, GCC 9, and the very latest versions of the programs.

NVIDIA 440.26 Beta Linux Driver Brings HDMI 2.1 VRR, VP9 VDPAU Decode + Much More

Canonical Outs Linux Kernel Security Update for Ubuntu 19.04 to Patch 9 Flaws

Marius Nestor informs us that a new security kernel security patch was released for Ubuntu 19.04 just prior to 19.10's release. Seven security flaws are fixed, with details provided, and all users are advised to upgrade their systems asap.
