Mir 1.7.0 Release

Alan Griffiths reports the release of Mir 1.7 telling us it's primarily a bugfix release. Mir 1.7 retains optional support for mirclient based apps, with hope the 'experimental' status on X11 support (via Xwayland) will be removed shortly. Details and enhancements are listed.

Linux In 2020 Can Finally Provide Sane Monitoring Of SATA Drive Temperatures

Michael Larabel reminds us that the linux kernel hasn't been able to get SATA/SCSI drive temperature details, thus it's been up to user space tools to do it for us. Well, not so with Linux kernel 5.6. With detail on how this is accomplished, we are provided links should we need more details.

First Look: Ubuntu is Making Changes to its Appearance Ahead of 20.04

Joey Sneddon tells us the community team working on Yaru GTK theme spent a week at Canonical's London HQ working on Ubuntu's desktop appearance. A number of issues were resolved and some changes were added that will go into 20.04; including purple. The purple will be seen in sliders and check boxes, and is shown in numerous screen pictures. Contrast and other improvements have also been made that we should see in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS; though some may get pushed to 20.10.

Intel Gen7 Graphics Mitigation Will Try To Avoid Performance Loss In Final Version

Michael Larabel writes that Intel's open-source developers have been working on the Gen7 graphics mitigation, and released it under a "request for comments" flag. Intel hopes it eliminates the huge performance hit caused by the mitigation of CVE-2019-14615. Michael suspects Intel have known about the performance hit since August, with links provided and some mention of Gen9 graphics mitigation.
