Ubuntu 16.04 LTS transitions to Extended Security Maintenance (ESM)

This Canonical blog informs us that Ubuntu 16.04 LTS transitioned to extended security maintenance (ESM) at the end of April 2021 with it's five year standard support having been completed. Reminding us Ubuntu 16.04 is a Common Criteria certified OS providing FIPS 140-2 certified cryptographic modules, we are told ESM support is until April 2024 and is available for 3 machines (50 for Ubuntu members). We are told how we can access ESM and given details on why we'd need it, including what is covered.

Ubuntu Studio 18.04 Extended Support ends

Erich Eickmeyer reminds us Ubuntu Studio 18.04 was not a LTS release and of the reasons why. However, the Ubuntu Studio Backports PPA provided extended support until Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS could be released. We are told that the Ubuntu Studio Backports PPA has now been removed, given support has now ended. Users are reminded to upgrade to 20.04 LTS as soon as possible.

Brain Fagioli in a short post writes about Ubuntu 21.10 which is due to release on 14 October 2021, being called Impish Indri. Brian gives us many details found in the release schedule. We are also told daily builds of "Impish Indri" are already available if we don't want to wait, with the reminder that it's development software and thus maybe "buggy".

Ubuntu Touch OTA-17 Arrives May 12 with NFC Support, Available for Testing Now

Marius Nestor informs us of UBports Foundation having announced they are after testers for the upcoming Ubuntu Touch OTA-17 update, which is due for final release on 12 May 2021. We are told the transition to Ubuntu 20.04 continues, but this update improves some battery life for some devices, camera flash, zoom, rotation & more. Ubuntu 18.04 Flavors Reach End of Life, Users Urged to Upgrade to 20.04 LTS

KDE Developers Polish The Desktop Ahead Of Next Month's Plasma 5.22

Michael Larabel relates that the KDE Plasma 5.22 release depends on Plasma 5.22 Beta and that next week marks the hard feature freeze and strings freeze.
