Ubuntu Community Council election 2022 underway!

We are told "Voting has begun for the Ubuntu Community Council election". This involves "all seven seats for a two year term"; all Ubuntu Members are eligible to vote. Candidates, along with URLs are provided to get details of the people standing in the election. Details of the email are provided, including what to do if no email is received. We're told voting closes 20 October 2022 at 23:59 UTC.

Kinetic Kudu (22.10) Final Freeze

Brian Murray, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, reports that the "final freeze for Kinetic Kudu has now been reached". Brian gives us some clues as to what this means, and what is required for exceptions. We are encouraged to help test if we have some time, so we can ensure Ubuntu 22.10 is a great release.

This generated some posts in the press which led to 102 comments from 57 people. In this post, Ian explores what has happened with those 57 contributors to that thread, including some statistics on those still active. We are asked if we know what this means, with a hope it can explore & improve participation.

Ubuntu Desktop Team Indaba (AMA) - October 21, 2022 @ 3PM UTC

Heather Ellsworth reminds us about the Ubuntu Desktop Team Indaba, with a link to prior Indabas. Normally held on the last Friday of the month, we are told the October Indaba will be held the day after release of Ubuntu 22.10. Along with the date and time, we are told it will include Philipp Kewisch, Adam Szopa, Oliver Smith, Ken VanDine, Rudra Saraswat along with Heather. The Indaba is streamed to both Youtube and Twitch. This thread can be used for questions if you're unable to make the stream live.

KDE Crash Tracking System

We are told KDE is now evaluating a new crash tracking system: Sentry. We are told anyone with a KDE developer account can access it, along with a reminder of some of the problems with Bugzilla. This post gives us details of Sentry, some clues of how it can be useful (including screenshots) and an embedded KDE Akademy 2022 talk on the subject.

Canonical displays controversial 'ad' in shell update prog

Liam Proven writes that some "Ubuntu users are not happy at receiving a promotional message ... when upgrading their systems". Along with a quick reminder that it's linked to Ubuntu Pro, we are told users see it when using apt, and also told the Reg. FOSS desk does not see it as advertising, as it alerts sysadmins to a free service for older machines which is worth knowing about. A quick discussion on alternatives that avoid the message is provided.

New Ubuntu Linux Kernel Security Updates Fix 16 Vulnerabilities, Patch Now

Marius Nestor alerts us to the release of security fixes for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 16.04 ESM. We are given the CVEs that are fixed, the people who discovered the flaws, plus how our systems can be exploited if left unpatched. We are given the kernel package versions that contain these fixes, and reminded to upgrade our systems as soon as possible.

KDE Plasma 5.26 Released! To Land in PPA for (K)Ubuntu 22.10

Ji M tells us that KDE Plasma desktop 5.26 has been released, gives us a quick rundown of some of the new features, before telling us it will be available for (K)Ubuntu 22.10 users via the Kubuntu backports PPA. We are shown some screenshots, many links are provided including to the release announcement.

KDE Gear 22.08.2 Adds 7-Zip and Samba 4.16 or Later Compatibility, Many Bug Fixes

Marius Nestor writes about the release of KDE Gear 22.08.2 by the KDE Project. We are firstly told it includes support for Samba 4.16 - allowing connections to Windows Samba shares within KDE apps like Dolphin, before being told of other improvements. In all there are more than 130 changes, with a link to the full changelog provided.

KDE Plasma 5.24.7 LTS Improves Support for Flatpak Apps, Plasma Wayland, and More
