Results of the election of the Ubuntu Membership Board

Torsten Franz on behalf of the Ubuntu Community Council reports that Khairul Aizat Kamarudzzaman (fenris), Dani Llewellyn (diddledani), Billy D. Quinn (Bashing-om), Mattia Rizzolo (mapreri), Miles Sharpe (Kilos) and Larry Tarvin (wild_man) "have been elected to the Ubuntu Membership Board for the next two years". Congratulations are offered.

Extended call for Ubuntu Technical Board candidates

Merlijn Sebrechts on behalf of the Ubuntu Community Council alerts that the Ubuntu Technical Board is still seeking candidates. The call remains open ‘till 27 November 2022. Merlijn gives us some details of what is required, and how to nominate yourself or another person.

One of the best desktop-based app launchers specifically designed for the GNOME Shell

Vladimir Ciobica asks if we like GNOME, but dislike the search widget integrated into Overview; if so we may like Search Light instead. We are told it gives "a more stylish, compact, and arguably better" experience, in what the author describes as one of the best GNOME extensions.

Ubuntu Bring-Up Happening For The StarFive VisionFive 2 RISC-V Board

Michael Larabel reminds us that official Ubuntu Linux images were released for the StarFive VisionFive RISC-V board, and that pre-orders are open for the StarFive VisionFive 2 boards. We are given some specs of the boards, and told Canonical engineers are working to ensure Ubuntu will be ready. Canonical engineer Heinrich Schuchardt notes Ubuntu 22.10 already runs using the vendor kernel, but a Ubuntu kernel will be ready soon.

Microsoft Promotes Windows Subsystem For Linux "WSL" To GA Status

Michael Larabel reminds us the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) has been around for six years, quickly mentioning some of what is included, and that only today has WSL been promoted to general availability (GA) status. We are told the latest update fixes "100s of bugs", and given a link to the Microsoft Dev site if we need more info.

Proton 7.0-5 Gets More Games Running On Linux & The Steam Deck

Michael Larabel reports that Valve has released Proton 7.0-5 as "their newest version of their Wine downstream that powers Steam Play". Some Windows games that are now playable are listed, with links provided for more details, including to the Proton 7.0-5 changes.

Ubuntu 23.04 (Lunar Lobster) Daily Builds Are Now Available for Download

Marius Nestor reminds us the development cycle kicked off in October 2022 with a toolchain upload. We are then told of some of the features we'll see in Ubuntu 23.04, and some screenshots are provided. Marius then tells us the daily ISOs are available - with a link so we can give it a try. We are also told this includes all flavors.

TUXEDO Stellaris 17 and Polaris 15 Linux Gaming Laptops Get High-End NVIDIA GPUs

Ubuntu Touch OTA-24 Released for Ubuntu Phone Users, Here’s What’s New

Marius Nestor reports on the UBports Foundation announcing the release of Ubuntu Touch OTA-24. We are given some highlights in this release, told of some of the bugs fixed, and given a list of the devices supported by Ubuntu Touch.

KDE Ending Out November With UI Improvements, More Plasma Wayland Fixes

Michael Larabel relays the pertinent "many user interface improvements, bug fixes, and other improvements to have landed" from developer Nate Graham's weekly summary. Of special note is a major overhaul of Dragon Player, and additions to Filelight. Various other touches are listed and we are told there are various other bug fixes. AMD ROCm 5.3.3 Now Available With Optimizations & Bug Fixes

Jason R. Wilson writes about AMD's ROCm 5.3.3 release which is a collaboration between AMD engineers and the open-source community. A list of supported OSes is provided, which includes Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Discussion of what ROCm can provide, and some history is provided, along with links to install, and documentation are given too.

Second edition of Designing with LibreOffice available for free download

We are told in this post, that Bruce Byfield and Jean Hollis Weber have announced the second edition of "Designing with LibreOffice". We are told the book is available as a .ODT or .PDF file. We are told this edition updates information in the first edition including updated screenshots. Links are provided.

Add Gnome Tweaks, Extensions App into System Menu in Ubuntu 22.04

Ji m writes for GNOME users of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS who love enhancing their desktop experience with additional extensions. In this article he explores adding an 'Extension Manager'. Many screenshots on using the tool are provided, as well as telling us Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (or Ubuntu 18.04 LTS though it wasn't tested) users can use it (with additional provided command).
