Ubuntu Cinnamon for Official Flavor Status

Joshua Peisach, the lead of the Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix team, makes a request for Ubuntu Cinnamon to be recognized as an official flavor. In giving the history of the remix project, Joshua lists the current community members involved, and provides many links with the proposal that Ubuntu Cinnamon becomes an official flavor starting with the Ubuntu 23.04 release.

Extended call for Ubuntu Technical Board candidates

Torsten Franz, on behalf of the Ubuntu Community Council, reports the received applications for the Ubuntu Technical Board. Applicants are: Sebastien Bacher, Robie Basak, Ben Collins, Steve Langasek, Lukas Märdian, Alex Murray, Simon Quigley, Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre, and Łukasz Zemczak. The candidates are asked to introduce themselves on this thread, and here the candidates will respond to questions. The names are to be put to Mark Shuttleworth for shortlisting, prior to voting on by the Ubuntu Development team.

Heather Ellsworth reminds us what the Ubuntu Desktop Team Indaba is, and gives a link to the prior Indabas. We are then told the next Indaba is 16 December 2022 at 16:00 UTC and will include Aaron Prisk (@aaronprisk ), Heather Ellsworth (@hellsworth), Jay Lacroix and Nathan Haines (@nhaines). This indaba will talk about Ubuntu books, including the two authors: Jay and Nathan.

Lubuntu 22.04 Backports PPA Released With LXQt 1.2

Simon Quigley on behalf of the Lubuntu Team posts that the Backports PPA now contains LXQt 1.2; which is available now for general use. Details on using it are provided, with a caveat that existing users of Lubuntu 22.04 LTS that intend upgrading to Lubuntu 22.10 should not use it.

Xfce 4.18pre2 released

Alexander Schwinn tells us Xfce 4.18pre2 "is now available for download" and gives us the programs which are included within the release. We are given links to the source tarballs, and told the final release of Xfce 4.18 is expected 15 December 2022. We are also told all testing is appreciated.

Xubuntu Development Update December 2022

Sean Davis gives us a comprehensive look at the development of Xubuntu 23.04. Sean notes: "Xubuntu 23.04 had a good start in November. PipeWire and Flatpak are now included. More updates from Xfce 4.17 have landed. Usability and accessibility improvements round out the month."

NVIDIA 525.60.11 Linux Driver Released With Many Fixes, Vulkan Improvements

Michael Larabel reports that Nvidia has released "the v525.60.11 driver as their first stable Linux driver in the R525 series". We are given some details of what it provides, including the change-log notes, and the link to nvidia.com.

Intel Linux Kernel Graphics Driver Patched For New Security Sensitive Bug

Michael Larabel writes about CVE-2022-4139; which is a i915 kernel graphics driver security issue impacting all Gen12 graphics chips. A description of the problem is given, and we are told it impacts all linux kernels 5.4 and newer. The five line patch which mitigates the issue should be back-ported "in short order".

Plasma Mobile Gear 22.11 Is Out for Linux Phones and Tablets with Many Improvements

Marius Nestor tells us the KDE Project has released Plasma Mobile Gear 22.11, which is the last update for the Plasma Mobile UI before it's merged with KDE Gear. We are told of many of the improvements found in this release, with links for more details.

Xfce’s Apps Update for November 2022: Xfce 4.18 Preview, Plugin Updates, and More

Marius Nestor gives us his exclusive 'Xfce Apps Update' for November 2022, which includes the "development team released the first preview of the upcoming Xfce 4.18 release". We are told the release is on schedule, plus told some of what is included. Outside of this 4.18 news, we are told many Xfce plugins have been updated this month, with a link to the official mailing list included.

AMD ROCm 5.4 Released With HIP Improvements

Michael Larabel reports that AMD has "shipped ROCm 5.4 as the newest version of their open-source Linux CPU compute stack". We are told most of the changes in the change-log relate to HIP improvements and given a few details of these, and told some of the Linux distributions supported, which include Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS and Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS.

Ubuntu Users Get New Linux Kernel Security Updates, 10 Vulnerabilities Patched

Marius Nestor alerts us to Canonical publishing security updates that fix up to 16 vulnerabilities in Ubuntu 22.10, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as well as Ubuntu 16.04 and 14.04 ESM products. We are given details of the CVEs patched, how they could be misused if left unpatched, and links for more details. The kernel version numbers with patches are provided, and we are told to upgrade our systems as soon as possible.

Cameractrls is a Neat Webcam Settings App for Linux

Joey Sneddon tells us about Cameractlrls; a free open-source utility that can be used via GTK GUI or command line that gives control to your webcam. Joey expresses the view that it's easier to use than Guvcview, giving us a list of what it can control. Many details of the tool are provided, we're told why Joey likes it, and given links if we'd like to download or learn more.

Latest Steam Client Update Improves New Big Picture Mode, Fixes Borderlands 2 Crash

Marius Nestor tells us of the latest stable Steam Client released by Valve, giving us some details of what is included. Beyond improving the recently introduced Big Picture Mode, we are told some issues that caused some games such as Borderlands 2 to crash are rectified, and more. We are reminded how we can upgrade our Steam Client.
