Ubuntu Desktop Team Indaba (AMA) - March 5, 2023 @ 7PM UTC

Heather Ellsworth reminds us of what Indaba means, and how they relate to Ubuntu. We are told the February Indaba will be held on 5 March 2023 (the March Indaba will be later in the month). We are given the date/time and where we can see it live (Youtube, Twitch) and it will include Heather, Aaron Prisk, Oliver Smith, Ken VanDine and GloriusEggroll (aka Eggy). We are told the focus is gaming on Linux.

Call for testing: mir-kiosk, mir-test-tools, egmde, ubuntu-frame, ubuntu-frame-vnc

Michał Sawicz reports the update of mir-kiosk, egmde, mir-test-tools, and ubuntu-frame to incorporate the latest Mir 2.12.1 release. Details on how to use it are given for testing, with results requested to be left on this thread.

Ubuntu 23.04 Testing Week

Aaron Prisk tells us Ubuntu and flavors are having another Ubuntu Testing Week from 2 March until 9 March 2023, this time testing Ubuntu 23.04. We are told testing is easy, and given details on how we can help test. We are shown an installation page from the new Desktop Installer which is being tested, but we're also told the legacy (ubiquity) installer also still needs testing. Links for how we can communicate with others involved in testing are provided, along with many links if you're new to testing.

Xubuntu Development Update March 2023

Sean Davis tells us that Xubuntu Minimal went live in February 2023. We are reminded this was known as Xubuntu Core previously, and what the purpose of this is, given some comparison sizes (compared with Xubuntu Desktop ISOs), and told we can try it now. We are next reminded of the removal of Flatpaks & given a link showing how easy they are to use on Xubuntu. We're also told Xubuntu is now on Mastodon, along with details on the changes to packages that have occurred, before reminding us to help with Ubuntu 23.04 Testing week.

Flatpaks and Kubuntu

This post reminds us what Kubuntu is, and that it's made many package types available to Kubuntu users in the past. We are told Canonical and the Ubuntu Technical Board have chosen to support only snaps on initial install. A link is made to community member arraybolt3’s post, who discusses issues supporting Flatpaks. We are then told Kubuntu can still use flatpaks, they just need to be installed with the required commands given.

Plasma 5.27.2 for Kubuntu 22.10 available via PPA

This Kubuntu post reports many requests for Plasma 5.27.2 to be made available in the backports PPA for Kubuntu 22.10. Commands to use this PPA are provided, and a reminder that users should review the proposed updates prior to installing, but that Plasma 5.27.2 is now there.

Ubuntu 22.04.2 is as predictable as an operating system can be… and that's a good thing

Jack Wallen reports Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Desktop has "everything you need for a desktop OS". Jack then talks about "Wow" favor in relation to marketing, and that Ubuntu has used that in the past. We are told most users "just want their technology to work" which is how recent releases of Ubuntu have been. We're told of some of the fixes & package upgrades, and told we "cannot go wrong" with this release.

Ubuntu Devs Working on New ‘Mini’ ISO (<140MiB in Size)

Joey Sneddon tells us that there is work taking place that should result in a minimal ISO being released with Ubuntu 23.04. We are given a link to the Ubuntu developer mailing-list for discussions, and told Dan Bungert is heading the work. Joey provides quotes from Lukasz Zemczak that tell us what the ISO will provide, and that this ISO will be officially supported unlike the prior minimal ISOs.
