Opportunity Open Source - conference report

Dimple Kuriakose reports on the Opportunity Open Source conference, reminding us when and where it was held. We're told how this event started as a "proposed GSoC student meetup" but was made into a conference promoting open source with tracks on OpenPrinting, Zephyr, and documentation. We're shown many events, including those involved from Canonical. The event was live streamed with links provided.

Firefox snap with Wayland enabled by default in Ubuntu 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur)

Amin Bandali informs us that the firefox snap "now has Wayland enabled by default in Ubuntu 23.10", though still defaults to XWayland for older releases. We're told why this change was performed, and if running Mantic we're told how we can confirm it's running this way, or if using an older release how we can switch to use Wayland. We're asked to report any issues, with details of how to revert this change if required.

Real-time Ubuntu is now available in AWS Marketplace

Canonical announces a furtherance in the AWS partnership with Ubuntu Pro 22.04 LTS real-time kernel now listing in AWS' Marketplace. A description of the benefits of the LTS real-time kernel offering is provided from several sources; providing "innovating at the edge for AWS workloads" from the cloud.

Outdated snap packages

Alan Pope writes to express his concern for the shape of the snap store in order to support an ‘All Snap’ desktop next year. He discusses many of the current shortcomings that he sees: "broken, uninstallable, insecure, and outdated snaps provided in the snap store". Alan admits his own dereliction in maintaining his snaps and offers solutions to address these issues.

Erich Eickmeyer, while expressing his focus on Ubuntu Studio development, writes to the Ubuntu Studio community, thanking them for the "amazing generosity". Erich updates us on his circumstances, and hopes for part-time income coming from Ubuntu Studio, as he and his family are struggling. KDE: KDE neon user edition updates! Debian updates, Snaps on hold.

Scarlett Gately Moore advises that due to outside work pressures that she has had to "put snaps on hold". However. she says she is caught up and has a management team in place: Frameworks 5.110, Plasma 5.27.8, Applications 23.08.1, qml dependencies and packaging updates. For Debian a new upstream release of squashfuse is wrapping up. Scarlett makes the request for donations and provides her gofund.me link.

Libadwaita 1.4

Alice Mikhaylenko blogs that "Libadwaita 1.4 introduces a breakpoint system", which allows the UI to change depending on window size. This has introduced a tradeoff, which is discussed, as well as how this new feature can be used. Screenshots are provided in a descriptive way to help make use of this new feature. An Overview of New Features in Ubuntu 23.10

Ji m reminds us Ubuntu 23.10 has reached UI freeze, and thus writes about some of the features we'll find in Ubuntu 23.10. Firstly the new app center is mentioned, then TPM-backed full disk encryption, GNOME 45, install options and more. Links are provided if more specifics are required.

Ubuntu 23.10 Restores ZFS File-System Support In Its Installer

Michael Larabel reminds us of prior (Open)ZFS install options, before telling us it now exists again with Ubuntu 23.10. Quoting a bug report in which Tim Holmes-Mitra states "ZFS support is being added for 23.10 (both in subiquity and the desktop installer). For 23.10 ZFS encryption is not supported". We're told ZFS support is still experimental, and given some screenshots of how it appears on the desktop installer.

Ubuntu 23.04 & 22.04.3 Installs Haven't Been Following Their Own Security Best Practices

Michael Larabel writes that Ubuntu installs of Ubuntu 23.04, 22.04.3 LTS (with subiquity) made since April 2023 haven't followed "Ubuntu's own recommended security best practices". We're given the bug report outlining the issue, plus quotes of the issue, and the reason for the security policy. The fix will correct new installs, but installs made during this period should be manually checked.

10 Best Features in GNOME 45

Joey Sneddon writes that the GNOME 45 release is "attracting a lot of hype", and is included on upcoming Ubuntu 23.10. This post lists ten improvements found in GNOME 45, and should Ubuntu 23.10 "omit" anything on the final release, it's "(usually) trivial to manually add". Screenshots (including some GIFs) are included, with a note that these 10 only "scratch the surface" of everything found in GNOME 45.

Linux 6.5 Now Powering Ubuntu 23.10

Michael Larabel confirms Linux 6.5 kernel is now the default kernel for Mantic. Michael lauds the many benefits of the 6.5 version as a nice upgrade.
