Introduction

These release notes for Kubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) provide an overview of the release and document the known issues with Kubuntu 16.10.

Support lifespan

Kubuntu 16.10 will be supported for 9 months.

Designed to be a Breeze, Plasma 5 is now even further improved

Plasma 5, the next generation of KDE's desktop has been refined to make it smoother to use while retaining the familiar setup.

The 7th set of updates to Plasma 5 (latest and final bugfix release from September) is the default in this version of Kubuntu.

Combined with KDE Frameworks 5.26.0 the Plasma 5.7 desktop brings improved workflows, rewritten and improved task manager and system tray, another milestone step towards Wayland support, and improved Breeze icons and Plasma theme.

KDE Applications 16.04.3

Kubuntu comes with KDE Applications 16.04.3 containing all your favourite apps from KDE, including Dolphin.

Even more applications have been ported to KDE Frameworks 5, but those which aren't should fit in seamlessly.

Non-KDE applications include LibreOffice 5.2 and Firefox 49.

Getting Kubuntu 16.10

Upgrading from 16.04

Download a Disk Image


To upgrade to Kubuntu 16.10 from 16.04:
- Open Discover or Muon Package Manager
- Ensure that your current system is up to date by installing available updates
- Open Configure Software Sources from the settings menu. Depending on your version of Discover, this may be found in the 'advanced' sub-menu.
- Select the 'Updates' tab, and in the 'Release upgrade' section select Normal Releases.
- Kubuntu 16.10 should then be made available by your normal release upgrade method.
- An example method would be to search for and run 'update-manager' from the K menu or Krunner

Note: If the distribution upgrade process fails to launch, you may need to install the package ubuntu-release-upgrader-qt. See the known issues section below.

If you want to upgrade from console, open /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades file as root and change Prompt line to normal (from lts). Then run do-release-upgrade in console.

- Download a Bootable image. Direct downloads, torrents, and zysnc are available as options.

Known Problems

  • (1633692) upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10 may require a user to manually install the package ubuntu-release-upgrader-qt prior to running the upgrade

  • (1514491) kubuntu desktop inconsistency and integration issues: scrollbars. gtk3 button placement also not integrated

  • (1530523) kcm_driver_manager: Infinitely shows Collecting information

  • (1561051) Ubiquity-DM dies on Kubuntu images
