Kubuntu comes with KDE Applications 16.12.3 containing all your favourite apps from KDE, with the exception of PIM and related products.

This is the 16.12.3 update with bugfixes and translation updates. Most applications have been ported to KDE Frameworks 5 but those which aren't should fit in seamlessly.

KDE PIM applications have been held at version 16.04.3 as 16.12.3 packages did not quite make it for release day. Packages for 16.12.3 are now available in backports PPAs. Details can be found later in these release notes.

Non-KDE applications include LibreOffice 5.3.1 and Firefox 52.0.1.

Other release highlights

  • KDE Frameworks 5.31
  • Calligra Office Suite updated to Qt/KF5 version 3.0.1
  • Krita latest bugfix release - after this popular and advanced digital painting application was split from Calligra.
  • K3B updated to a Qt5/KF5 preview snapshot of the upcoming release from KDE Applications 17.04.

  • Kdevelop is now the most recent bugfix release of the 5.0.x series.
  • Numerous application and translation updates from KDE.

Getting Kubuntu 17.04

Upgrading from 16.10

Download a Disk Image

Note: It is advisable to purge the backports PPA (if enabled) before attempting an upgrade. To do that run in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

To upgrade to Kubuntu 17.04 from 16.10:

- Open Discover or optionally Muon Package Manager
- Ensure that your current system is up to date by installing available updates

If for some reason Discover does not then offer you the upgrade to 17.04, but you know it is available, you can do one of the following:

- Launch the graphical release upgrade by opening Krunner, or Konsole (or other terminal), and run:

kdesudo do-release-upgrade -m desktop -f DistUpgradeViewKDE

- Search for and run update-manager from the K menu or Krunner if you have this installed.

- Or if you want to upgrade purely via the console, run do-release-upgrade at your prompt.

- Download a Bootable image. Direct downloads, torrents, and zysnc are available as options.
- The following link contains some tips to put the image onto a DVD or USB Drive

Getting KDE PIM 16.12.3 packages from backports PPAs
