Who I am

My name is Mehmet Basaran, and I have been a member of the Ubuntu Kernel Team since 04/2024. I received bachelors degree from TOBB University computer engineering department in 2011 and masters from Bilkent University in 2014. Before joining Canonical, I was working on a Phd (which I dropped out of) on parallel/high-performance computing. Afterwards I worked on a commercial POSIX compliant RTOS for 5 years.

My Ubuntu story

I have started using Ubuntu in the early years of university which was around 2007 (Ubuntu 6.06) to get some school work done. I remember installing windows afterwards ubuntu which overwrote bootloader. I didn't know how to recover that so I had to re-install in the correct order to make it work. Slowly ubuntu became my daily driver (it was much easier to code here because of gcc + valgrind combo). It became my only OS afterwards.

My involvement

As a part of stable squad, I am working on SRU release cycles. Usually, my responsibilities include;

• cranking kernels,
• inspecting test results for regressions,
• organization / communication / helping out the rest of the team to close off past cycles.

Additionally, I work with TNT team on a new kernel test result viewing tool. Which will make it easier to inspect RT results and open up some possibilities for the future.

• I can review mailing list patches faster (I can learn more about the generic concepts in linux kernel and create a qemu setup for testing).
• I can learn more about SWM (Software Workflow Manager), Snaps, SRU cycle details.
• I can communicate more effectively / efficiently.
• I can ask more questions and be more active in the SRU training mattermost channel.
• I can improve my knowledge of debian packaging.
• I can Manage my time better.
• I can create test setup to recreate regressions and learn linux kernel debugging techniques to solve problems.

I have reviewed multiple kernel uploads for Mehmet and found them to be well prepared. I appreciate his careful approach and that he will bring up any concerns early. I trust him to be considering the effects of his uploads carefully.

Specific Experiences of working together

Mehmet has contributed to multiple rounds of security and SRU cycles (before and after gaining commit rights) and his submissions were always well prepared. He also helped closing off some old cycles that had accumulated a number of late kernels.

Areas of Improvement

Not much comes to my mind. Once upload rights are given, Mehment can start to help as cycle lead which offers plenty opportunities for improvement.

For that I am +1 for adding Mehmet to the kernel PPU list.
