Who I am

My name is Sarah Emery, and I have been a member of the Ubuntu Kernel Team since September 2025.

Joining Canonical was my first real job after University, where I studied computer science and got a Master's degree. I always loved low-level programming and systems, so working on the kernel had always been one of my major interests.

My Ubuntu story

Ubuntu was the first Linux distribution I used. It was a reliable environment for learning and development during my university years. Although I switched to Arch Linux for a while, I returned to Ubuntu upon joining Canonical. Today, it is my primary operating system for both work and personal projects.

My involvement

As a member of the kernel team, I focus on supporting the RISC-V architecture. My responsibilities include updating and building RISC-V-specific kernels, and further testing in both emulated environments and on real hardware. My work covers a broad spectrum of tasks, from preparing new kernels and enabling support for specific boards to backporting driver patches and maintaining EOL kernels. Additionally, I contribute to regression testing efforts for RISC-V.

I've been Sarah's mentor since she began at Canonical, and have gone through cranking, reviewing patches, backporting new kernels and all the other kernel team tasks as well as brought her into the meetings and discussions with the upstream RISC-V kernel community. I'm impressed by how she not only took on and improved the kernel CI tests for the RISC-V kernels, but have also created a RISC-V version of the latest development kernel without much help from me. Especially the last part makes me confident in Sarah's knowledge of our kernel packaging.

I have reviewed almost all of the RISC-V kernels Sarah has prepared which amounts to 32 according to the list above.

Sarah has been very thorough with writing down and checking every step needed to prepare the kernels and is good at reaching out whenever she has doubts about the right way to solve issues. Almost all the kernels I've seen from her have been flawless and for the few nit's I've found she has quickly understood why we do it differently and understood how to correct the mistake.

I don't have much experience working with Sarah outside reviewing her cranks. From what I can see, she adapted really fast and learned a lot about our tooling during the short time she has been with the team.
