I deal with preserving older technology in operational status lately and previously used a PowerPC running Lucid Lynx. I utilize a kirkwood-based SheevaPlug for back-end operations at home where tasks are either repetitive or are not necessarily interactive. As Ubuntu does not support the kirkwood variant of ARM I end up gaining proficiency with Debian using Squeeze on the SheevaPlug. My principal desktop computer was a BeagleBoard-xM that was running the armel release of Oneiric Ocelot but currently I use an x86 box running Precise Pangolin. Tiered service levels is how I describe my view of computing at home. My operations are split among my smartphone, the SheevaPlug, my netbook running Xubuntu, and the desktop that was based on the BeagleBoard and none uses an x86 board instead. No one device alone covers all that I want to do. In keeping a presence in differing processor platforms I can help serve my community by providing a knowledge base of experience. |
I have currently bricked a SheevaPlug and am hurriedly attempting to repurpose my BeagleBoard-xM to bridge the gap. Thanks to the SSH client I found for my my old-timey Nokia smartphone, I still have remote access to a number of things including machines in-house. The desktop is a hand-me-down that has outright crashed booting the LTS live CD but yet somehow booted the installers for VectorLinux Light 7.0 and Mageia 2 successfully. My desktop provides experience in other Linux traditions to help broaden my horizons. My netbook from System76 runs Xubuntu 12.04.1 and travels with me frequently. |
