== Introduction ==
Line 10: Line 11:
Hello fellow Ubuntu users. I am matt_symes.
Line 12: Line 12:
I am a software developer coding in C/C++, Python, HTML, CSS, Javascript and shell scripting. I also build and fix computers and configure networks. == About Me ==
Line 14: Line 14:
I run an Ubuntu 11.04 server and Ubuntu development version (currently 12.04) on my laptop. I also use Arch, Gentoo and Fedora and change between them as the mood takes me. My name is Jacob Vlijm.
Line 16: Line 16:
== About Me == I am an Ubuntu user since Natty. Started scripting with python shortly after I switched to Ubuntu, mainly to tweak the desktop and to automate common tasks. Never stopped doing that. Later on, many of these scripts were inspired by questions on Ask Ubuntu. Some of these projects lead to applications or indicators with a ppa.
Line 18: Line 18:
I first got into software development when using a BBC Model B 32K computer. Yes, you read that correct - 32K of memory ! I started writing in BASIC on it and then taught myself 6502 assembler. I then moved onto a Commodore 64, games consoles and, finally, onto PCs. In 2017, I joined the Ubuntu Budgie core team. In the team, My main focus is to work on applets and other desktop enhancements. Currently, I am mostly writing in Vala, although the singing beauty and flexibility of python is always tempting.
Line 20: Line 20:
I studied computer science at university and and then started my career developing software in C/C++ mainly on the Windows platform. I had my first taste of Linux using Mandrake (now Mandriva) and Red Hat before it became RHEL. Back in those days it was alot more difficult to configure and, with only a dial up modem to get technical information, could be a right pain. Being a musician for my day-job, I am also programming on a daily base in the context of being a member of the Ubuntu Budgie Team.
Line 22: Line 22:
Because work was based on Windows, i concentrated on Windows. I always kept an eye open to see what was happening with Linux but never used it as my main operating system. I have signed the code of conduct (https://launchpad.net/~vlijm/+codesofconduct).
Line 24: Line 24:
That changed with the release Ubuntu 9.10. I had bought a new Laptop and managed to completely erase the hard drive including the recovery partition, so much so that no recovery software would get the partitions back. At that time, I did not want to shell out for another copy of Windows. I had been running Ubuntu in a virtual machine before that so i felt comfortable enough to install it as my main operating system. It's Windows that i now run in a virtual machine. == Contact Information ==

Line 28: Line 37:
My main contributions to Ubuntu have been through the Ubuntu forums where i try to offer help and advice in, hopefully, a polite manner; although others will be the judge of that. I report spam and abusive or inappropriate posts whenever i see them.

I also wrote a script along with other forum members including hippytaff, to help diagnose wireless problems.
 * Active user on Ask Ubuntu as [[https://askubuntu.com/users/72216/jacob-vlijm|Jacob-Vlijm]] (65,000 rep) and ask Ubuntu Meta.
 * Member of the Ubuntu Budgie core team, Ubuntu Budgie developers and Ubuntu Budgie bug busters (https://ubuntubudgie.org). As such, I wrote a.o. 17 applets, a window shuffler for window tiling and other additional desktop enhancements.
 * Active in translating on several projects.
 * Previously to my Ubuntu Budgie team membership, I contributed a dozen indicators for Unity, mainly hosted on Launchpad, and a number of other applications. In many cases, these indicators were initiated or inspired by questions on Ask Ubuntu.
Line 34: Line 44:
I plan to continue using Linux and Ubuntu as my main operating system. My server has been very stable indeed, running Ubuntu. I plan on getting more involved in the testing side of Ubuntu and i have been considering starting or joining a software development project if time permits me. I am also considering using IRC alot more than i currently do.  * My main goal is to contribute to the growing quality and maturity of Ubuntu Budgie and to contribute to elegant and creative desktop solutions on the Ubuntu desktop in general. This includes:
 * Maintain and improve the current additions, applications and enhancements.
 * Become comfortable with an expanding set of languages (currently mostly writing in Vala & python).

{*} Jacob has good potential and has contributed considerably to Ubuntu community over the years I’ve interacted with him. He’s an author of multiple AppIndicators that were well received and featured on multiple community blogs. That is to say, he has worked extensively on improving user’s experience on Ubuntu within the capabilities and opportunities he has as part-time open source developer, and some of the projects he created do attract new users to Ubuntu and reinforce interest towards Ubuntu from existing users. Now, over the years me and Jacob had several disagreements on how to best approach solving particular problems and we have very different styles of developing in Python and vastly different outlook on shell scripting. That is to say, he is passionate about Ubuntu, like myself, and despite our differences I do have considerable respect for the guy as developer. To summarize, Jacob is deserves Ubuntu membership and has earned that over the years of contributing to the community. -- [[LaunchpadHome:1047481448-2]] <<DateTime(2019-03-24T16:53:07-0600)>> https://launchpad.net/~1047481448-2
