  • Supported: whether or not Ubuntu detected your printer automatically.

  • Works?: whether or not all of your printer's functions work in Ubuntu. (possibly after you've installed the correct PPD/driver files.)

  • Ubuntu Version: which version(s) of Ubuntu you are using the printer in. (4.10 (Warty Warthog), 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog), 5.10 (Breezy Badger) or 6.06 (Dapper Drake))

  • Comments: Comments or links that might help members of the Ubuntu community use this model of printer

  • Last Update: Date of last update to that printer entry.

For more Linux printer data, [http://www.linuxprinting.org LinuxPrinting.org] has databases, tutorials and suggestions.

ppd file on CD must be installed. After months of trying and working with brother technical support have yielded little success. Small files can be printed but documents of any significant size such as those created by browsers (Firefox or epiphany) cause the printer to lock up. - EricSJohansson / On the contrary, the printer works perfectly with the hpijs driver, which also supports duplex printing. This is a fantastic printer for Linux users. - ScottGranneman

Printing anything with graphics at 300dpi will cause a "20 MEM OVERFLOW" error. This happens unless you have installed an additional memory module. The driver will send the data all at once and not in chunks, which the printer can't handle.. Printing at 150dpi results in really ugly printouts (especially from firefox). The hp4laser supposedly is smart enough to send the data in chunks, but I'm not smart enough to configure it with cups (http://home.mn.rr.com/richardsons/sw/hp4laser/). (MikkoVirkkilä)

5.10

Even though the box says "requires MS Windows", I installed it under Windows and Ubuntu and it was much easier to set up in Ubuntu!! Nothing to do except follow the printer instructions up to it's 5 minute callibration, then press "setup" and enter the network details (e.g. 192.168.0.4). Switch it off and on again. Test that you can ping it from Ubuntu. If so, go to System -> Administration -> Printing -> New Printer, select "Network Printer", "HP JetDirect" and put 192.168.0.4 as "Host" leaving "port" as is (default 9100). Select "Photosmart 3210" as the Model (because this is the series name). That's it. To get scanning working type "hp-makeuri 192.168.0.4" to get the printer uri, then run "xsane <printer uri>" (e.g. xsane hpaio:/net/Photosmart_3200_series?ip=192.168.0.4). See http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-112364.html. Worked first time for me!
