ppd file on CD needs to be copied to system for duplex support. HL-5170 is same with more RAM and ethernet built-in | I have tried this, but no luck in duplex at all, standard printing problematic, depending on program/driver. - HiddeBrugmans |

ppd file on CD must be installed. After months of trying and working with brother technical support have yielded little success. Small files can be printed but documents of any significant size such as those created by browsers (Firefox or epiphany) cause the printer to lock up. - EricSJohansson / On the contrary, the printer works perfectly with the hpijs driver, which also supports duplex printing. This is a fantastic printer for Linux users. - ScottGranneman |

Printing anything with graphics at 300dpi will cause a "20 MEM OVERFLOW" error. This happens unless you have installed an additional memory module. The driver will send the data all at once and not in chunks, which the printer can't handle.. Printing at 150dpi results in really ugly printouts (especially from firefox). The hp4laser supposedly is smart enough to send the data in chunks, but I'm not smart enough to configure it with cups (http://home.mn.rr.com/richardsons/sw/hp4laser/). (MikkoVirkkilä) |

Alternative driver at [http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1020 Linuxprinting.org] is supposed to 'mostly' work but not here. Even though the box says "requires MS Windows", I installed it under Windows and Ubuntu and it was much easier to set up in Ubuntu!! Nothing to do except follow the printer instructions up to it's 5 minute callibration, then press "setup" and enter the network details (e.g. 192.168.0.4). Switch it off and on again. Test that you can ping it from Ubuntu. If so, go to System -> Administration -> Printing -> New Printer, select "Network Printer", "HP JetDirect" and put 192.168.0.4 as "Host" leaving "port" as is (default 9100). Select "Photosmart 3200" as the Model (because this is the series name). That's it. To get scanning working type "hp-makeuri 192.168.0.4" to get the printer uri, then run "xsane <printer uri>" (e.g. xsane hpaio:/net/Photosmart_3200_series?ip=192.168.0.4). See http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-112364.html. Worked first time for me! |

The X215, SCX-4216F and Xerox PE 16 appears to be the same printer. This will probably work for the Xerox as well. Download the SCX-4216F drivers from [http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/DR/200607/20060719092410609_UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz] and run installation program. This will install a configuration program and make the driver available in the CUPS printer setup. Printing works fine over smb, haven't tested scanning. |

Printer looks for DHCP server and works perfectly over a network (printer has inbuilt print server). To print from Adobe Reader change printing command from /usr/bin/lp to /usr/bin/lpr -YourPrinterName. www.linuxprinting.org suggest using the pxl mono driver but I found this stalled certain PDF print jobs - I use lj5grey and has fixed the problem. Quality and speed good. Could not get Lexmark proprietary drivers to work- you don't need it for this printer anyway. |
