How to help Kubuntu
We are a community project and always need help.
First thing is to get yourself a wiki page and introduce yourself to the developers, Riddell on #kubuntu is a good start. Then you can join [http://www.launchpad.net/people/kubuntu-team kubuntu-team]
There are then several possible ways to help...
Packaging
Make packages. Learning how to make Debian packages takes a couple evenings of reading and playing about, then years of experience to perfect your skills, but it is nevertheless a valuable skill. See KubuntuSuggestedPackages on ideas for things to package. Make sure there isn't already a package
in Debian (http://packages.debian.org)
on its way to Debian (http://bugs.debian.org/wnpp)
Kubuntu (http://packages.ubuntu.com)
on it's way to Kubuntu (http://revu.tauware.de/)
Once you've made a few packages you can join MOTU (Masters of the Universe) which means you get to upload your packages yourself without having to get others to upload them.
Any existing MOTU can help by reviewing new packages as people make them.
It would be useful to have some people who are also Debian Developers, meaning our changes can go back to Debian. KubuntuPackagingGuide will get you started.
It's important also to make sure packages are kept up to date with their authors and Debian.
CD Testing
In line with EdgyReleaseSchedule we hope to make several testing CDs (called knot CDs), a beta, release candidate and final CD. These CD images are made for x86, amd64 and powerPC in both live and install versions. We need all 6 CDs tested for each release. On the night before release drop onto #kubuntu and ask for the correct candidate image. Tell Riddell your results.
Programming
We need people to program a number of utilities. Here's where we need help most:
KubuntuDapperPackageManager - The package manager
KubuntuDapperSystemTools - Guidance
[:Katapult: Katapult]. - An item launcher, like [http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/overview Quicksilver] for OS X
KubuntuExpress - Live CD installer
- knetworkconf -
- A KDE version of hwdb-client
- A KDE frontend to network-manager
Documentation/Translation
We need documentation to cover a number of areas. For a list of docs currently in development for DapperDrake, see KubuntuDocs or doc.ubuntu.com. Take a look at what we're working on, perhaps there is something you would like to write? Feel free to contact any of the Docteam, see DocteamCommunications for more info.
- Translate. KDE stuff should be in Rosetta soon, available for translation.
Bug Triage
We have too many beasties open in [http://launchpad.net/bugs launchpad], please sort through them, marking duplicates, closing ones which have been fixed and confirming those that are still a problem. Fixing beasties is very welcome too.
Artwork
Suggestions for backgrounds? about:konqueror screens? kdm/ksplash themes? Cool Konqi poses? Please send them in. See KubuntuArtwork for more information.
Privileged People
MOTU who can review and upload packages include JonathanRiddell (Riddell), StephanHermann (\sh), Loic (pef), RaphaelPinson (raphink), MartinMeredith (mez), PatrickDavies (jpatrick), AnthonyMercatante (Tonio_),ZhengPengHou(freeflying). The [:MOTU/Teams/Kubuntu:MOTU KDE]. Would be nice to have more.
- Any debian developers able to send stuff up to Debian?
