Technical Tasks

These are tasks that require some technical skill. They are ranked roughly in order of skill required.

Testing hardware

Hardware has traditionally been a weak point for Linux. In order to find out what works, we need to make testing very rigourous and extensive. To do this, we need lots of people to help.

Laptop testing

If you own a laptop, help us by testing the lastest development releases. You can dual boot your machine if you need a stable version to work. This requires about 12 hours to start and about 4 hours per month for continual testing.

Server testing

If you have a server-specific hardware, please help us by testing the latest development releases. Don't do this on production machines.

Other periferal devices (printers, cameras, etc.)

This is any kind of hardware you plug into the machine, from printers to scanners to cameras and beyond. Some of these work, but some don't. Follow the steps on DebuggingRemovableDevices and then file bugs for those that don't work perfectly. Regardless of whether it worked or not, list the results on one of the HardwareSupport subpages.

Software Bug reporting

If you see a bug in the software that is in the Ubuntu repositories, don't hesitate to file a bug on it. Even if you don't know exactly what to say, simply telling us that it doesn't work is often good enough. We can walk you through the remaining steps.

Bug triage
