The Ubuntu IRC operators are responsible for managing the different Ubuntu core channels on freenode. From time to time, new operators are needed. This page documents the requirements and application process for anyone wishing to serve as an operator on Ubuntu core channels.

Types of operators

There are two types of operators in the Ubuntu IRC channels, Core Operators and Channel Specific Operators.

• A Core Operator is someone who has operator status in all of the Ubuntu core channels.

• A Channel Specific Operators are operators who has access in one or more core channels, but not all.

Both types of operators are required to follow the requirements set out in this document. The process to become a Core Operator is the same as for a Channel Specific Operator, except for the following:

• To apply to become a Core Operator, you must first be an active operator in one, or more, of the core channels.

Operator requirements

• Operators must have signed the Ubuntu Code of Conduct and agree to follow the Leadership Code of Conduct.

• Operators are expected to know and be compliant with both the User IRC Guidelines and the Operator IRC Guidelines

• Operators must have a Launchpad account, and have their IRC nickname listed on their Launchpad page.

• Operators must be active on the channels where they serve as an operator. In addition, operators on the core Ubuntu channels are expected to be present on the #ubuntu-ops channel.

• Operators will go through a probation period as documented here

• Operators in the the Ubuntu Core operator Team will be required to mentor new operators

Operator application process

If you feel that you meet all of the requirements for being an Ubuntu operator and you wish to serve as an operator on one or more of the Ubuntu core IRC channels, you should perform the following steps:

1. Apply to join the appropriate operator team(s) on Launchpad. For example, if you wish to become an #ubuntu-devel operator, you should apply to join ~irc-ubuntu-devel-ops on Launchpad.

2. You should add a section to your wiki page explaining why you wish to be an Ubuntu IRC operator for the channel(s) you applied to. Be sure to also explain how you are qualified to be an operator for the channel(s) in question. It is also recommended that you collect testimonials from other people who have worked closely with you in the past.

3. When the Ubuntu IRC Council feels the need to have more operators in a particular channel or channels, or to add another Core Operator, they will send an email to the ubuntu-irc mailing list. After this email is sent, there will be a one week period for any last minute applications and/or for applicants to finish updating their wiki pages. During this time Testimonials and concerns can be emailed direct to the Ubuntu IRC Council mailing list, or listed on your wiki page.

4. Once this one week period has passed, the IRC Council will discuss amongst themselves and appoint the new operator(s). This decision will be sent to the ubuntu-irc mailing list.
