Welcome to the MOTU Science team. We are responsible for the upkeep of science packages within the Universe repository. Goals

• Make sure science packages are synced from Debian.
• Make sure Debian know what packages are in Ubuntu but not in Debian.
• Make sure Ubuntu science packages actually work. Some need to be tested and bug reports need to be filed.

• Let's get a .desktop file for all the relevent science packages. Many don't have .desktop files or icons. I believe that most of the packages should have something like Categories=ConsoleOnly;Math; or Categories=Application;Science; . Please refer to the freedesktop.org standards for [http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ .desktop files] and [http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/ menus]. The main wiki page for this is UniversePackageWithoutDesktopFile.

• Package some of the programs found at [http://www.gnomefiles.org/category.php?cat_id=6 gnomefiles.org] for inclusion into Ubuntu and eventually in Debian.

These are programs that are not yet packaged for Debian/Ubuntu but would be nice to have:

• [http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php?soft_id=1123 FlowDesigner] - "FlowDesigner is a free (GPL/LGPL) data flow oriented development environment. It can be used to build complex applications by combining small, reusable building blocks. In some ways, it is similar to both Simulink and LabView, but is hardly a clone of either." (Kyral is looking into this) -- Its in REVU now - (Kyral)

• [http://icculus.org/~jcspray/plotdrop/ PlotDrop] - PlotDrop is designed for quick simple visualisation of 2D data series. It is a minimal GNOME frontend to GNUPlot. -- 1/08/06 - Accepted and is in Dapper Universe, 1/11/06 - Uploaded to Debian unstable (LaserJock)

• [http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php?soft_id=112 GChemPaint] - A 2D chemical structures editor for the Gnome desktop. It should enable embedding some chemistry in files from other programs using Bonobo. Debian ITP [http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=341487 #341487].

• [http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php?soft_id=676 EasyChem] - Draw press-quality molecules and chemical 2D formulas (organic molecules in particular). Export to many formats (e.g. Postscript, LaTeX and Fig). -- 1/01/2006 - Accepted and is in Dapper Universe (Kyral)

• [http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php?soft_id=471 Gabedit] - a graphical interface to Gaussian, Molcas, Molpro and MPQC computational chemistry packages.

• [http://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/ Texmaker] - a very nice LaTeX editor similar to Kile. (just added to universe and there are 2 Debian ITPs, [http://bugs.debian.org/345806 #345806] and [http://bugs.debian.org/342456 #342456])

• [http://ktechlab.org/ KTechlab] - KTechlab is an IDE for electronic circuits and microcontrollers.

• [http://k3dsurf.sourceforge.net/ K3DSurf] - K3DSurf is a program to visualize and manipulate Multidimensional surfaces by using Mathematical equations. It's also a "Modeler" for POV-Ray in the area of parametric surfaces. Debian ITP [http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=345715 #345715].

• [http://frsl06.physik.uni-freiburg.de/privat/stille/kpl/ Kpl] - a program for two- and three-dimensional graphical presentation of data sets and functions. Debian ITP [http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=348015 348015].

• [http://www.gamgi.org/ GAMGI] - a package to build, visualize and analyse atomic structures. (Kyral is going to work on this)
