Notes This is my secod report of Ubuntu on this laptop. Previous one can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Laptop/Natty/DellInspironM5030 There is still problem with booting this laptop from Ubuntu disk. Unlike with 10.10 releases of Ubuntu, with 12.04.1 boot-up process hangs on ubuntu screen. The only option to start ubuntu, is to pass "acpi=off" into kernel. I have tried Linux Mint Debian edition and it start fine in Mate environment (no 3D). Fedora 17 is just like Ubuntu - won't boot with disabling ACPI. Ticket raised agains this laptop (or shell we say AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4200 graphic card):

From jockey-gtk (Additional drivers) you get 2 options to install ATI/AMD driver, however: * first FGLRX driver fails to install * second FGLRX driver installs fine, and you can boot without passing "acpi=off" but then top Unit bar doesn't appear (Bug #1028543 - Invisible Unity bars). The way I have made is working is:

  1. boot and install with "acpi=off"
  2. install amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy.run driver downloaded from http://support.amd.com

Everything now works fine, and I can now suspend and see battery status. You just have to remember that this way, your laptop will fail to boot if you update kernel. With ATI driver I have managed to extend screen to external monitor. With ubuntu control centre I have managed to only mirror screen. With "AMD Catalyst Control" you have more options. As this is cheap laptop there are some limitation on it:

  • no possibility to change hard drive or RAM without opening whole laptop
  • no HDMI
  • single core CPU
  • low resolution web cam
  • no expansion slot

It is disappointing that not everything works on this machine, when your read that this model was also shipped with Ubuntu. Webcam, wifi and most of FN keys work fine out of the box. The only strange problem I have found is that I could not play sound thought usb speaker. I know that speaker works, as it has been tested on other ubuntu laptop.

You have to get used to using any F1-F12 keys, as you have to use it with Fn key. Without it they work as function keys for brightness, volume, battery information, wifi switch, external monitor switch, multimedia control. It is especially annoying when you try to use well known shortcut "Alt-F4" to close application. On this laptop you have to press "Alt-Fn-F4" to do so. Battery lifetime is also impressive for a cheap laptop, as it can last couple of hours. This Laptop was sold in UK in Aldi stores chain. Dell Model No: 5030-0971 Dell Service Tag: DSC63-N1 Country: UK

I would not recommend installing ubuntu or Fedora on this laptop for newbies, however Linux Mint would work out of the box (without 3D) . Once you install Linux and ATI driver this laptop is singing and dancing and is great for Web/skype/office tasks.
