How are Mozilla applications translated upstream

There is no official way to translate Mozilla products, other than the fact that all translations must land in the Mercurial source tree. All teams use different methods.

Some examples:

  • Some teams work directly on the Mercurial repository, by translating with a normal text editor and committing them.
  • Others convert the XPI files to PO with the Translate Toolkit tools and work on them with PO editors.

  • Others use Mozilla Translator for offline translation

  • Others use Narro for online translation, export the XPI files and manually commit them in Mercurial
