Meta actions
The dealing with these bug reports revealed a usability issue on keyboard layouts that needs to be solved. The default shortcut to switch between keyboard layouts is Alt+AltGr, and this is a setting that comes from Xorg/xkeyboard-config. Ubuntu keeps this default in most cases, unless a specific language team selects an alternative layout (they often select Alt+Shift). The issue is that
Alt+AltGr is not publicised in the documents and it is an arcane shortcut.
Alt+AltGr does not work anymore, and you cannot use it to switch between keyboard layouts. This is an issue with Xorg and it will probably take time to fix, 462249
I see two meta actions from this exercise,
- the keyboard indicator should give a hint (make more prominent) the shortcut that helps switch between keyboard layouts. This is probably an Ubuntu UI design request.
the Alt+AltGr default shortcut should be changed; we need to get the usability people involved, find something more appropriate (Alt+Shift?) and change it as default throughout.
- Note that Alt+Shift is a bad choice, as it could more easily be used for an application short-cut than the previous one. The trick of using modifiers on both sides of the keyboard was good for avoiding this, could “press both Control keys” (or both shift keys) work? ~~~~
- I use Shift+Shift to switch and it is quite usable without conflicts. (Alt+Shift is said to have an issue with Inkscape). In any case, what is needed is to make this shortcut more prominent, easily shown in the keyboard indicator).
