=== Changing The Theme/ Fonts ===
A lot of the appeal of Linux is its flexibility. One of the most obvious ways to customize a system is through its look. You can do this by changing the theme and fonts.
==== Theme ====
To change the theme, it is best to get the GNOME Tweak Tool, which can downloaded from the Software Center.
Once you have the Tweak Tool, open it and open the "Theme" tab. All the theme settings can be changed here. Many more themes than the ones on the list are available for download. [[http://www.gnome-look.org|GnomeLook]] is a great place to look for more themes.
==== Font ====
The font can be changed similarly in the "Fonts" tab.

FAQs

Why Ubuntu GNOME is not shipped with the latest version of GNOME?

Please keep in mind that we can only ship in the standard installation, packages which are in the main Ubuntu repositories. Due to the closeness of release schedules between Ubuntu and GNOME, the latest versions of GNOME do NOT get fully tested 'before' each release cycle of Ubuntu. As such it appears Ubuntu is a cycle behind. However we also provide the Gnome 3 PPA which brings most components up to the latest versions for each cycle. More details can be found on the PPA.

Installing software.

Adding software in Ubuntu is really simple, which is one of the advantages the OS has over other distributions. To add software to UbuntuGNOME...

  1. Bring up the GNOME Shell, and search for "Ubuntu Software Center"
  2. Select from hundreds of free or paid softwares.

If you want to install a more obscure package, you will need to do some simple work in the terminal. A good place to start learning about this is on the AptGet HOWTO page.

Installing Java

Installing Java is one of the first things that many developers will want to do. While OpenJDK works 99% of the time, some may want true Oracle Java. For those people, the Ubuntu community Java Documentation will be a good place to start reading.

OpenJDK can be installed using the Software Center or Terminal.
