Unity Progress Report - Alt-Tab style

New ISO images available : Lubuntu

Julien Lavergne shares the news of the latest ISOs of Lubuntu which are now available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/. Julien also mentions that he hopes that the next release of Lubuntu will be the first official release of Lubuntu as part of the Ubuntu family.

Ubuntu 11.10 Development update

Next week the 3rd Alpha of Ubuntu 11.10 is due and everybody is trying to get ready for the release. The switch from Gnome 2.32 in Ubuntu 11.04 to Gnome 3 for Ubuntu 11.10 is going really well with the Gnome 3 team consisting of mostly non-Canonical contributors. Also meet a new contributor, Christian Titze from Germany.

Launchpad News

No more monthly 90 minute downtime

Starting very soon users of Launchpad will no longer have to suffer the monthly 90 minute downtime that occured every month for schema changes, DB server maintenance and so forth. This maintenance has been reduced to just 6 minutes.

Less mail for mailing list admins

In an effort to reduce the amount of email administrators receive, admins for open teams in launchpad will no longer receive join and leave messages for their teams. In the future they plan to have a subscription facility for team admins that do want these emails.

Approve your own translation imports

"Until today, when you imported a template or translation file into Launchpad for the first time, you'd have to wait for a member of the Canonical Launchpad team to review and then approve that file before your project's translation community could make use of it.

Now, if you're a project maintainer, you can manage your project's translations import queue yourself."

Ubuntu Cloud Portal: Cloud Days complete, logs available

On July 25-26 Ahmed Kamal assembled a team of Ubuntu cloud experts to do a series of Ubuntu Classroom sessions for the "Cloud Days" event. Technologies discussed include Orchestra, Ensemble, OpenStack and Eucalyptus, logs of all these sessions are now available.

Ubuntu Linux gets serious about business partners

Canonical has introduced a new channel partner program, Ubuntu Advantage, which is designed to help resellers bring a new set of support services for Ubuntu server, desktop and cloud installations. Canonical has also simplified its hardware certification program with only one Canonical-endorsed hardware certification program being available, known as Ubuntu Certified.

Ubuntu dressed in cheap elastic support, sent out in public

To fix a pricing disparity that existed in support contracts between bare-metal servers used inside corporate data centers and virtual servers used in the cloud, Canonical has introduced The Ubuntu Advantage Cloud Guest which lets a company take out one support contract that covers up to 100 virtual machine images running instances of Ubuntu.

Asus Starts Selling €209 Ubuntu-Powered Netbook in Europe

Asus has followed up their launch of the 1215P netbook running Linux in Europe two weeks ago with the luanch of the R011PX running Ubuntu in Germany. The R011PX is available from Amazon for 209 Euros, which is 40 Euros less than its Windows counterpart.

Linux 4 Hope takes old computers, installs Ubuntu, gives them to people in need

Lubuntu 11.10 Default Theme "Ozone2" Gets Revamped

The default theme for Lubuntu (a lightweight derivative of Ubuntu that uses LXDE) named Ozone2 will be based on a theme called Zukitwo for the upcoming 11.10 release. The reason for the change is that Zukitwo comes in both GTK2 and GTK3 versions and this will give a more unified look for all applications in the new release.

Revamped Session Menu Lands in Ubuntu 11.10

Ubuntu 11.10 has received an updated Session Menu with shortcuts to various settings including 'System Settings', 'Displays' and 'Start-up Applications' to name a few. As with any Alpha release this menu is subject to likely change before the final product ships in October.

Indian Judiciary Choose Ubuntu 10.04 (85k PCs)

Ramesh Babu, working as a Judge in Tamil Nadu, India, reported to Ronnie Tucker of Full Circle Magazine that the Supreme Court of India has directed all the Courts (approx 17000 Courts) to move from RHEL5 to Ubuntu 10.04.

Back in May Canonical's Ubuntu One service surpassed the 1 million subscribers mark. To celebrate they are now offering 5G of space to their free customers (up from 2G) and have added space to their paid plans as well. They have also made their Ubuntu One App Developer Program public to ease the development of applications geared toward the Ubuntu One service.
