UDS 13.05: Ubuntu’s second online developer summit

Michael Hall announces the next Ubuntu Developer Summit May 14th-16th, 2013 from 14:00 UTC to 20:00 UTC. He encourages people to register a blueprint and ask the track leads to add a session for them. He also outlines some improvements to the Google+ Hangouts, the plenaries, the schedule, summit scheduler, and registration processes.

New Ubuntu Membership Board Members

Elizabeth Krumbach announces the Ubuntu Membership Board Members approved by the Ubuntu Community Council. Zhengpeng Hou, Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre, Jared Norris, Eleanor Chen, and Penelope Stowe are welcomed (or welcomed back!) into the 1200 UTC Membership Board and Iulian Udrea, Javier Lopez, and Benjamin Kerensa were welcomed (or welcomed back!) into the 2200 UTC Membership Board.

LoCo News

Changes in Ubuntu Ohio

Stephen Michael Kellat details the future of Ubuntu Ohio, which will involve changing from being led by a council to being led by a sole individual. This means that, as of April 7th, Kellat serves as Point of Contact and Leader for Ubuntu Ohio. Upcoming orders of business include reevaluating how to grow Ohio’s Ubuntu community, and to prepare for Ohio Linux Fest 2013. In the meantime, the “Burning Circle” podcast will continue, and they will be working to more effectively reach Ubuntu enthusiasts across the state.

Jhosman Lizarazo announces that Flisol Bogota 2013 will take place on May 4th, 2013 and will “concentrate conferences, workshops, booths, hackathon, free culture, and day facility under one roof.” The primary goal of the event is the promotion and development of free software. The Ubuntu Columbian team will be participating along with many others.

Official Ubuntu Mirrors in HP Cloud

Ben Howard writes about the official mirrors now available in certain regions through Canonical and HP. Ubuntu Server 12.10 users will use the new mirror address automatically, and 12.04 desktop users can configure their systems to use them as well.

After a considerable amount of work done to improve documentation in Ubuntu since first starting in the 11.04 cycle, Jeremy Bicha has announced he is resigning from the Docs Team. He cites life and other responsibilities as the reason for the resignation. Jeremy will be available for a few weeks to help pass the torch to anyone willing to take his place.

Kevin DuBois: Mir and Android GPU’s

Kevin DuBois explains how the Ubuntu Touch and Mir teams plan to provide a stable graphic driver platform by using components of existing Android drivers. He also includes a video with a sneak peek at Mir and the Qt client for the Ubuntu Touch interface.

James Hunt: Upstart User Sessions in Ubuntu Raring

He gives an overview of how Upstart is now capable of managing the default Ubuntu user's desktop sessions, and he explains what changes are necessary to try it out. He also gives a short tutorial on how to write a user job for Upstart and how to monitor your Upstart session.

Canonical Design Team: Core utility apps visual exploration

The Design Team is working on developing the look and feel of the core utility apps. The goal is to focus on the essential information in each app, while keeping the design as clean as possible, yielding a minimal, sophisticated feel. Further refinements to the concepts will continue to be made in the coming weeks.

Ubuntu Touch Summary (week 14)

Bill Filler writes that a good amount of progress has been made in the past week on Ubuntu Touch. Updates include a dynamic app lens showing installed applications, core apps (calendar, clock, and calculator) included in the daily builds, and performance and HUD updates in the gallery. Work is also underway to enable hardware accelerated media playback as well as video recording in the camera app.
