Ubuntu Forums are back up and a post mortem
James Troup announces that the Ubuntu Forums are now back up and running. He writes a "post mortem" of the breach and the actions taken by the Canonical IS team. James details what happened, what the attacker could and could not access, what the IS team has done in response to this break, and what questions remain. He concludes the post mortem with an apology for the security breach, the data leak, and downtime.

OSCON DAY TWO THREE AND FOUR

Ubuntu Ohio Prepares For an UbuCon
Ubuntu Ohio issued a last call for speakers at the UbuCon they’re running at Ohio Linux Fest 2013 as they were running short of speakers. Shortly after the call was issued, their leader Stephen Michael Kellat announced that enough speakers were secured and that the UbuCon would proceed as previously planned. Until the final speaker commitments were secured, the UbuCon was at risk of being canceled for lack of sufficient content.

Jono Bacon writes that the campaign to raise $32 million using the crowd-funding site Indiegogo to build Ubuntu Edge has reached the $7 million mark in one week with over 15,000 funders. Jono lists some media outlets that have covered the campaign and links to a video where Jane Silber, Canonical's CEO, talks about the campaign on CNBC.

Howard Chan: Testdrive Hackfest
Howard Chan announces the Testdrive Hackfest to be held on the 10th August on irc.freenode.net at #ubuntu-quality. Testdrive is a tool for managing ISO testing. Testdrive automates a substantial part of the testing process. It's development has been slow, but Chan teamed up with Jackson Doak to restart active development. You can participate on the Hackfest from 10:00 to 16:00 UTC, and Google+ Hangouts on Air will be hosted at 10:00 and 14:00 UTC, each one with a one-hour duration.

Daniel Holbach: Ubuntu Touch Porting: next steps
Daniel Holbach shows us the results of the Ubuntu Touch Porting Clinic he hosted with the Touch team on August 1st. He mentions that Sergio Schvezov published a new branch of phablet-tools with new features, as well as lots of questions being answered in order to port Ubuntu Touch. He also states some things you can do in order to help with porting.

There are still obstacles to its widespread adoption, but if employees only access applications via the browser, and a company doesn't use complex spreadsheet macros or document formats, then Raring Ringtail might be worth considering. NVIDIA's Linux Driver On Ubuntu Is Very Competitive With Windows 8
Michael Larabel of Phoronix shares benchmarks of the recent NVIDIA Linux Driver for Ubuntu and concludes: “The Nouveau driver performance was generally very slow, but that's to be expected besides its other shortcomings. Overall, if you're using the binary NVIDIA Linux driver (or on Solaris and FreeBSD too) the level of feature support and performance should be comparable to that of Microsoft Windows.”

Unity 8 Available In The Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander Repositories
Andrew of WebUpd8 writes that Unity 8 has landed in the Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander repositories. He says, "while I was able to run it on my Saucy computer, most stuff didn't work." Andrew lists the features that should work for the final Ubuntu 13.10 release and provides instructions on how to install and test Unity 8.

Ubuntu Desktop To Drop PowerPC Builds Later This Week
Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! writes that PowerPC builds of Ubuntu desktop are to be dropped after PowerPC builds of Ubuntu 13.10 have failed to successfully build for over a month. He adds that Ubuntu Server will remain supported on PPC for now, and that for desktop users Lubuntu is one of a number of Ubuntu-based Linux distributions still supporting the platform.

Ubuntu 13.10's Ambiance and Radiance updated with visual refinements
razvi of iloveubuntu writes that "in Ubuntu 13.04, various apps come with a faulty theming, minor-yet-noticeable visual details that add an unfinished look & feel to several GTK+3 applications, among which Nautilus, Evince, System Settings, etc." razvi adds that Ubuntu's default themes have been updated in Ubuntu 13.10 by introducing support for dark toolbars and menus in multiple GTK+3 applications and provides some screenshots to illustrate the changes.
