UGJ, ETA 3 months

Javier L. reminds us that the Ubuntu Global Jam, a world wide event intended to collaborate as a community around Ubuntu, will take place from Friday 4th April 2014 to Sunday 6th April 2014. Javier says that the Ubuntu-MX team will host their event on Saturday 5th April and that they have already pushed publicity through their media channels.

Call for testing: Juju and gccgo

James Page informs us that an objective for 14.04 is to have a single toolchain for Go in Juju and the only way that this can be done is to use gccgo instead of golang-go. James shows us how to switch between the golang gc built binaries and the gccgo built versions to make diagnosing gccgo specific issues easier.

Jonathan Riddell: Tier 1 is a Slam Dunk

Jonathan Riddell writes "KDE Frameworks 5 tech preview shipped last week and we've been packaging furiously. This is all new packaging from scratch, none of our automated scripts we have for KDE SC. Tier 1 is in our experimental PPA for Trusty. Special thanks to Scarlett our newest Kubuntu Ninja who is doing a stormer." Jonathan links to the KDE Frameworks 5 web page and to the experimental PPA where the packages can be found.

David Planella: Make Ubuntu speak your language

David Planella reminds us all of the importance of translation and how you can help. With the upcoming release of the first Ubuntu Touch phones in the coming year. David tells us that translation will be vitally important to ensure full viability around the world in the coming weeks, months and years.

Benjamin Kerensa: Thoughts on Ubuntu Touch Images

Benjamin Kerensa responds to the announcement that Canonical will cease to produce Ubuntu Touch images for certain Nexus devices in the near future. He suggests that instead of producing a set number of images for a select few devices, Canonical could instead choose to simply update its instructions on building images for any device, leaving it up to developers to produce images for their device(s).

Stephen M. Webb: The future looks very small.

Stephen Webb explains the work he and others are doing in Ubuntu to ensure that Ubuntu works out-of-the-box on high DPI screens. As it currently stands neither Windows nor Ubuntu does too good of a job on such screens though that is sure to change in the next few years as they become more common.

Steve Conklin: Ubuntu File System Benchmarking

Steve Conklin tells us that he's been working to implement file system benchmarking as part of the test process that the kernel team applies to every kernel update. Steve reproduces an announcement that he sent to the Ubuntu Kernel mailing list which covers his work.

Valve’s OpenGL Debugger Developed on Kubuntu

Jonathan Riddell reports that one of Valve's developers has announced a new OpenGL debugger that is being developed on Kubuntu. Jonathan says "Lovely to know Kubuntu is helping bring the next generation of games on all platforms."

Daniel Holbach marks the start of a new blog series, which highlights developers of popular and/or upcoming apps, who they are, their thoughts on Ubuntu development and future plans. This week, kicking off the series we are treated to an interview with Martin Borho and Raúl Yeguas, two of the developers of the new Weather app.

Testing wanted: grub2 2.02~beta2-2

On the Ubuntu Developer mailing list, Colin Watson appeals for help testing GRUB 2.02 which represents a year and a half of upstream development. Colin tells us how to install the updated version, lists the new features, and links to the bug report where both positive and negative feedback can be left.

Bejan Alizadeh of the Canonical Design team says "Our main goal is that there is a consistent transition for sharing photos across the phone." Bejan shares the latest transitions with us, reminds us that this is still a work in progress, and appeals for feedback.

Ubuntu Touch Nexus 5 Support On Hold, Other Nexus Devices Dropped

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! informs us that the Ubuntu Engineering team will continue to focus on the Nexus 4 for the current release cycle, dropping (for now at least) plans for the Nexus 5. Additionally, builds for the following supported Nexus devices will be discontinued as of the end of January:

  • Nexus 10 (2012)
  • Nexus 7 (2012)
  • Galaxy Nexus

Ubuntu Likely Won't Appear On Phones Until 2015

Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports on the likelihood of an Ubuntu Phone appearing in 2014 as reported by Jono Bacon in a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA). Michael says "Now that 2014 is here, the word now is that it will likely not be until 2015 when an Ubuntu Phone is coming out of any major device manufacturers."

GNOME Shell 3.10 Lands In Ubuntu 14.04

Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us that GNOME Shell 3.10 will be included in the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS release. He says the update to GNOME 3.10 was previously blocked by the GNOME Control Center, which ended up being forked by Canonical until their own Ubuntu System Settings could be developed.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS May Ship With Beta Version of GRUB 2

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! says that even though 14.04 is a LTS release, it may ship with a beta version of GRUB 2.0 due to many new features including numerous improvements to coreboot & EFI platforms. As such, GRUB 2.0 has now been pushed to the ‘proposed’ repositories for 14.04 Trusty Tahr, where it will be tested before a final decision is made.

GNOME 3.10 Will Be Available To Install In Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! informs us that GNOME 3.10 will be available to install in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Joey-Elijah says that the updated version of GNOME Shell, along with a number of new GNOME applications have been pushed into Ubuntu 14.04's testing repositories.

Welcome to the Laptop Machine

Penn Manor High School’s technology department treats us to an update on their 1:1 Laptop Program. After a two-day marathon of laptop setup, they now have 1725 laptops ready for distribution to Penn Manor high school students. Using Fast Linux Deployment Toolkit (FLDT), developed by senior Andrew Lobos, as many as 50 laptops can be imaged and setup at once. FLDT is available for use and development on GitHub.

The Top 7 Best Linux Distros for 2014

Carla Schroder of Linux.com does a rundown of 7 classes of Linux distributions for 2014, including “most beautiful” and “best enterprise” categories. For “best desktop distro” she names Ubuntu flavor Xubuntu and in the “best laptop distro” category she ranks Lubuntu at the top.
