Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) End of Life reached on January 27 2014

Adam Conrad, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, confirms that Ubuntu 13.04 is no longer supported and no more package updates will be accepted. Adam says the supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 13.04 is via Ubuntu 13.10 for which he provides a link to the upgrade instructions.

Ubuntu’s Juju Wins Cloud Awards ‘Best Cloud Automation Solution’

Mark Baker, Server Project Manager, is thrilled to announce that out of 200 entries, Juju has been named the 2013-2014 Cloud Awards winner for Best Cloud Automation Solution – a category new to the awards this year. Mark says "We’d like to thank the whole Ubuntu community for its support, and to Juju contributors who continue to add to our diverse Charms library."

Stephen M. Webb: Progress on the Converged Desktop

Stephen Webb tells us that one of his side projects is a Unity8 login session that can be installed alongside other desktops including Unity7. Stephen describes some of the successes and problems of Unity8 in its current form saying "I think this is pretty exciting. That’s why I’m letting you all in on this project in its infancy. "

Ubuntu Kylin: 14.04 Wallpaper Contest Started!

The Ubuntu Kylin community has announced the beginning of the Wallpaper Contest for Trusty. The topic is ‘the most beautiful China’. During the wallpaper contest for Saucy, the Ubuntu Kylin community collected more than 120 wonderful submissions and 20 of them were selected into the ubuntukylin-wallpapers package.

Expect something Ubuntu flavoured at Mobile World Congress

htxt reports on Mark Shuttleworth’s announcement of Ubuntu OS’ presence at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and notes that “Ubuntu Phone has been steadily picking up momentum over the last year.” They conclude “While we don’t expect an Ubuntu Edge sized announcement at MWC, we will most definitely be heading across to the Ubuntu booth to find out what’s what in the land of the other Linux based phone OS.”

Nautilus 3.10 Available In Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr

Andrew from WebUpd8 tells us that Nautilus 3.10 will be included in the upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 release. While Unity users will see few, if any changes, those running Ubuntu GNOME will be treated to the new GNOME header bars, known as client-side decorations, among other updates to Nautilus.

Canonical At Mobile World Congress 2014 – What Can We Expect?

Joey-Elijah Sneddon from OMG! Ubuntu! tells us about his expectations for Canonical at the upcoming Mobile World Congress, which will be held in Barcelona this month. “It’s the world’s biggest meeting of mobile industry experts, enthusiasts and original equipment manufacturers and, once again, Canonical will be in attendance,” Sneddon states.

Ubuntu Planning To Develop Its Own File Manager

Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports on a mailing list post from an Ubuntu developer which he interprets as meaning that Ubuntu is planning to introduce their own home grown file manager in Ubuntu 14.10 to replace GNOME's Nautilus.

As a follow-up, Jono Bacon explains in a Google+ post that this is not the case (https://plus.google.com/114419073019603780828/posts/bZUqFPhfHRX), clarifying that Oliver is starting initial discussions to explore what would be wanted and needed in a new Ubuntu-specific file manager.
