Ohio Team Wiki Team Wiki Update/Clean Up

Svetlana Belkin documents some of the recent work the Ohio LoCo team has put in to clean up the new wiki, including removal of unused pages and merging of similar pages.

Free Official Ubuntu Books for Local Teams

Jorge Castro announces an offer for verified LoCo teams from Prentice Hall: each is entitled to a copy of the recently published 8th edition of The Official Ubuntu Book. He gives instructions for LoCo contacts to follow in order to organize shipment of the book.

How to run a Global Jam event

Daniel Holbach announces a couple hangouts for teams who have questions about running Ubuntu Global Jam events coming up on Wednesday August 27th. The two hangouts are going to be at:

  • 10 UTC (Alan Pope and Daniel Holbach)
  • 19 UTC (Michael Hall and Nicholas Skaggs)

Daniel also writes "It's a lot more fun if we have folks from LoCo teams on the hangout, so if you organised jam-like events in the past in your LoCo, let us know and we'll do the event together.

Archive-triggered Cloud Image Builds

Ben Howard announces archive-triggered (rather than time-based) Ubuntu Cloud image builds in an effort to build images when they are needed, like in the midst the recent Heartbleed vulnerability, and not waste resources when a build is unnecessary. Ben writes: “Now, instead of building every day at 00:30 UTC, the build starts when the archive has been updated and the packages in the prior cloud image build is older than the archive version.”

Ubuntu Women: Calling For Testers for Orientation Quiz

Svetlana Belkin puts a call out to the community for testers of a newcomer Orientation quiz written by the Ubuntu Italy team and adopted by the Ubuntu Women project for use by the global community. A demo site has been deployed and source code is available upon request.

Dustin Kirkland: Call for Testing: Docker 1.0.1 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty)

Dustin Kirkland puts out a call for testing of Docker 1.0.1, which has landed in the trusty-proposed archive. To aid testing, he provides instructions users can use to either install or upgrade their version of Docker and how to run a simple shell.

Ubuntu OpenStack — the natural choice for telcos and service providers

Canonical shares results from the OpenStack Foundation survey this year showing that 55% of OpenStack clouds run by those polled are running Ubuntu. The article goes on to cite several reasons to use Ubuntu for OpenStack, including an “Extensive portfolio of tools to make hardware provisioning, service deployment and orchestration, and cloud operation management quick, easy, and hassle-free.”

Juju plays in the big leagues at Linux Foundation survey

Sally Radwan discusses results from a recent Linux.com poll and writes: “In a survey of more than 550 respondents conducted by linux.com and The New Stack, Juju came in forth in the “provisioning and management tools” category, edging out well-established competitors like Chef and Vagrant.“

Ubuntu now available on VMware vCloud Air

On August 21st Canonical and VMWare announcemed that “certified Ubuntu LTS images are available on VMware vCloud® Air™, an enterprise-grade cloud platform offering customers performance, reliability, and security for their cloud infrastructures.” The article goes on to discuss benefits for existing customers and also notes that some configurations allow a company “to use its existing VMware ESXi hypervisors as a foundation for running OpenStack.”

VMware Hybrid Now Available In Ubuntu Flavors

Ben Kepes of Forbes reports on the recent news that Canonical and VMware are officially certifying Ubuntu on VMWare’s vCloud Air (formerly vCHS). He writes: “This announcement is good for VMware (another bunch of customers they can target) and it’s good for Canonical (they get to stamp “Ubuntu Inside” on another enterprise cloud product). But most of all it’s good for those organizations that already run applications on top of Ubuntu.”

Ubuntu MATE Remix Seeks Official Spin Status

Joey Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! reports on the latest news from the Ubuntu MATE Remix team regarding their efforts to become an official flavor, writing “In an update, Martin Wimpress says that the Ubuntu Technical Board is in ‘support of Ubuntu MATE’ and that a few ‘formalities’ are left outstanding before the request for official endorsement can proceed.”

The Linux desktop-a-week review: Ubuntu Unity

Bryan Lunduke of Network World does a review of Unity. In the beginning of the article he acknowledges his discomfort and dislike for Unity and does a deep dive into some of the features and issues he has with it. While he concludes that it “could be much better” he also writes “I actually didn't find anything in Unity that would prevent me from enjoyably using my Linux-powered PC. It worked, and it has been quite reliable. In fact, if Unity were the only Desktop Environment available for Linux... I would use it quite happily.”

Munich Council Say Talk of LiMux Demise Is Greatly Exaggerated

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! shares comments from a Munich city council spokesman who has “attempted to clarify the reasons behind its plan to re-examine the role of open-source software in local government IT systems” and concludes that it’s too early to say whether a switch away from Linux is likely for Munich.

A look at Google’s internal desktop OS: Goobuntu

Jan Willem Aldershoff of Myce writes about Goobuntu, an operating system that is combination of security enhancements and Google’s own applications and their "other" OS of choice. The OS is based on the LTS versions of Ubuntu and is used by 20,000 of Google Employees. The article also explains a few of the OS’s ‘secret’ features.
