Canonical and Data Foundry to provide hosted private cloud

Canonical announce that Data Foundry, a global provider of colocation, data center, and managed services, will be partnering them to provide a private cloud, as well. Built by the experts at Canonical’s BootStack service, the OpenStack-powered cloud will be exhibited by Canonical at the Gartner Data Service event from 2-5 December.

Kubuntu Wire: Kubuntu Part of KDE’s Google Code-in

Jonathan Riddell informs us that Google’s Code-in is a project to facilitate teen contributions to open source projects. He says that KDE is participating as one of the mentoring organizations and that Kubuntu will be posting projects on KDE’s behalf.

CompuLab launches Utilite2: Tiny ARM-based Ubuntu/Android PC

Liliputing’s Brad Linder announces Utilite’s latest addition to its line of miniature low-power desktops. With a volume smaller than the average mouse, the Utilite2 consumes as little as 3 watts, has a quad-core ARM processor, Bluetooth 4.0, and HDMI output, among other features.

HP’s fanless 2.2-pound laptop includes Broadwell and a 2560×1440 screen

Andrew Cunningham of Ars Technica offers a preview of two new Ultrabooks by the name of HP EliteBook Folio 1020 that feature a 0.62 inches thick chassis, up to 2560x1440 resolution, touch options, a 12.5” screen, are as light as 2.2 pounds, have a 9 hour runtime, use 4.5 watts, and are completely fanless. Andrew wraps up the article with a suggestion that Intel’s CES showcase may include a faster processor.

Official Ubuntu 14.10 ‘Utopic Unicorn’ T-Shirts Now Available to Buy

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! announces the availability of the official shirts of the Utopic Unicorn 14.10 release. He says that T-shirts have been a part of every distro release since Hardy Heron 8.04 and that the current shirts come in dusk blue for men or hot pink for women, both featuring Canonical’s origami unicorn logo. Joey-Elijah finishes by reminding us that older release shirts are available in the sale section.

UbuTab: An Ubuntu Tablet With A Terabyte Hard Drive

Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us that UbuTab, another crowd-funded tablet has launched, and that it features a 7mm 1TB spinning hard drive and ships with Android. He also gives us details of the pricing and a brief specification.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To Ubuntu 14.10 Offers Some Performance Improvements

Michael Larabel of Phoronix provides some benchmarks that show how the CPU performance of Ubuntu has evolved between the 12.04 LTS and 14.10 releases. He says that his article looks at the non-graphics performance of Ubuntu and that other comparisons will follow.

Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us that MJ Technology is looking to deliver a tablet equivalent to the Ubuntu Edge which failed to in its crowd-funding campaign. He gives us a brief specification, and shows us a photograph of the prototype.

Ubuntu 14.10 MATE edition - Almost fabulous

Dedoimedo writes about the installation, look and feel, resource usage, and the applications of Ubuntu MATE 14.10, noting that "someone sometime back in the early 2000s came up with the ideal productivity formula, and it's never been bested." Dedoimedo concludes that it is a very cool distro, notes a serious problem, and says "Highly polished, slick, and almost overwhelmingly simple and easy to use. "
