Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) released

Adam Conrad, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, announces the release of Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf. He advises from where to download the release, points out various caveats, workarounds and known issues, and reminds us of how we can help to shape Ubuntu by providing links which tell us how we can participate in the Ubuntu project.

Mark Shuttleworth takes a brief look at some of the features that are part of and will be improved in the next release of Ubuntu, i.e. LDX, Snappy, MAAS and Juju. He announces: “All of these are coming together beautifully, making Ubuntu the fastest path to magic of all sorts. And that magic will go by the codename… xenial xerus!” adding his usual explanation of the meaning of the code name and its relevance to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Online Summit (3-5 Nov): Get your sessions in

Daniel Holbach writes “from 3-5 Nov we are going to have our next Ubuntu Online Summit where we plan the X release. As at the last times, everything will happen on Google Hangouts and the schedule is going to be up at summit.ubuntu.com.“ He emphasizes the short amount of time that it takes to propose a session whether they are discussion or planning sessions.

Announcing the UbuCon Summit

David Planella writes: “I am thrilled to announce the next big event in the Ubuntu calendar: the UbuCon Summit, taking place in Pasadena, CA, in the US, from the 21st to 22nd of January 2016, hosted at SCALE and with Mark Shuttleworth on the opening keynote.” He also tells us that the event will be structured as a two day conference with tracks for Users and Developers, and that more details of the event will be released over the coming weeks.

Marco Ceppi shares results from the 2015-10-21 12:00 UTC Membership meeting, writing: “DuPingping has been an active Ask Ubuntu member, working diligently on less glamorous janitorial tasks as well as supplying excellent answers to users in need. They advocate Ubuntu through software they've created available free and exclusively on Ubuntu.”

LoCo Council Call For Nominations

Walter Lapchynski outlines the procedure that needs to be followed due to Sergio Meneses' and José Antonio Rey’s terms expiring from the Council. Walter advises the requirements of nominees for the vacant position, advises the dates between which nominations will be accepted and says that any nominations will be forwarded to the Community Council with a request that they consider applications in their next meeting.

Will Cooke shares his story of how he got started with Linux and Ubuntu, after being the owner of a Launchpad account for 10 years. Update on Ubuntu Phone security issue

Olli Ries writes a clear update on a security vulnerability which was discovered on the Ubuntu phone and which has now been addressed. He says that 15 people installed an app which modified the boot screen and gave the intruder root access. Olli assures us that the problem has been addressed and that updates will be pushed to all Ubuntu phones soon.

Marcos Costales reviews, with the aid of some screenshots, the new release of uNav, a GPS navigation app for the Ubuntu phone. He shows us many of the releases improvements, looks at the new Mapzen engine which calculates routings, the search capability for Points of Interest, and emphasizes that the app is “100% GPL and based 100% in libre projects.”

Phone update: OTA-7

Amrishar Prashar lists the updates and improvements that are part of the latest Ubuntu phone release known as OTA-7 which include improved social media handling, various bug fixes and support for the SVG format.

Origami Wily Werewolf Competition

Amrisha Prashar informs us that with the launch of Ubuntu 15.10 comes a competition to test Origami skills relating to Wily Werewolf. She lists what is required to enter the competition and informs us that the winner will receive an Ubuntu E5 phone.

Tendering with Ubuntu

Maria Bonnefon writes that Canonical are aware of a growing demand for organisations to save money and who have issued tenders requesting Ubuntu and/or Ubuntu Certification. She says that public entities working with a constrained budget may want to analyze implementing an alternate OS, and that they may have to consider that all the ‘evils’ that are cast upon Linux may, in fact, be unfounded.

Ubuntu’s Path to Convergence

Richard Collins writes that Ubuntu device convergence is now starting to happen and that smartphones will carry a full Ubuntu desktop interface. He lists the features that users will expect of their phones, pointing out: “However a truly converged smartphone or tablet designed with the combination of mobility and desktop productivity is only really achieved using an OS built on a single, fully contained codebase.”

Snappy Core unlocks IoT value within the Dell Edge Gateway 5000 Series

Jordana Sherman informs us that Dell launched “the Dell Edge Gateway 5000 Series, a purpose-built IoT gateway”, and that Dell has chosen to offer snappy Ubuntu core as an option. She says: “Snappy Ubuntu Core’s ability to automatically roll back to the last known working version of the OS is invaluable to our IoT customers. Should an OS update fail to boot due to any reason, Ubuntu Core will automatically revert back to its last known good OS version”

Canonical Says Ubuntu Phones Will Run Any Linux App on Open Source OS

Christopher Tozzi, The VAR Guy, refers to several sources that indicate that it will be possible to run any Linux application on Ubuntu although not all will run well on phones for practical reasons. He says that whether this feature has appeal to a wide audience “depends on how willing open source programmers are to design Linux apps that can be both PC- and phone-friendly at the same time.”

Brand New Ubuntu 15.10 T-Shirt Available to Buy

Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 Ships With Experimental Wayland Session

Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us some changes in the latest release of Ubuntu GNOME pointing out that one of the big changes is a Wayland session that isn’t enabled by default. He goes on to say that he’s sad to see that GNOME 3.16 is used in the release rather than GNOME 3.18 which offers better Wayland support.

External Screen Support For Unity 8 On Ubuntu Phone Is Finally Near

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes that Canonical’s Łukasz Zemczak has reported that there is a big Unity 8 update due to land that has been long in development. Michael says: “It's great to see more of Ubuntu's convergence goals finally being realized and the important external screen support for Ubuntu phones getting tackled as part of that.”
