We are working to collect links to active user groups to help Ubuntu users connect with one another. Your participation is appreciated. The regions are sorted alphabetically and then sorted by the monthly meeting date.
Since California is a huge state with 58 counties and yet 68% of the population resides in just three statistical areas (Greater LA, SF Bay Area & Inland Empire) we have used the measures used nationwide to group the areas of the state. Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and combined statistical areas (CSAs) are used by the US OMB and we use the same system for the regions of our state as well.
Central Valley
Central Valley wikipedia - Metropolitan Fresno CSA, Sacramento metro CSA (El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Yolo, Yuba & Sutter counties), Bakersfield MSA (Kern County), Modesto MSA (Stanislaus County), Visalia-Porterville MSA (Tulare County), Merced MSA, Chico MSA (Butte County), Redding MSA (Shasta County). I see information about the inclusion of the San Joaquin in both the Central Valley and SF Bay Area now.

San Francisco Bay Area
San Francisco Bay Area has a Combined Statistical Area which includes the standard nine counties plus San Joaquin, Santa Cruz and San Benito. The nine Bay Area counties include Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Marin County, Napa County, San Francisco County, San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, Solano County, and Sonoma County
There are numerous Linux and Open Source and related User Groups in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. Rather than an almost guaranteed to always be out-of-date list here, you may want to check one or more of these generally well curated lists/calendars, and also the respective User Group web sites, etc.:

We have made personal contact with some user groups and continue to have relationships with them. User Group Contacts describes how to contact groups and what we can offer them.
