Ubuntu Developer Summit: 27-29 August 2013

The Ubuntu Developer Summit will be taking place Tuesday, 27th Aug 2013 through Thursday, 29th Aug 2013 from 2pm UTC to 8pm UTC. As usual, the event is completely open and accessible to everyone at summit.ubuntu.com.

Mark Shuttleworth: Two weeks with Mir

Mark Shuttleworth writes about his experience using Mir for the past two weeks. He notes that the system feels smoother using Mir, and that X and Compiz appear to be using less memory and fewer CPU cycles than when X was directly handling the hardware. He then goes on to discuss competition, the importance of making the Mir decision, and expresses his desire for other variants and distributions to consider Mir.

Ubuntu at OSCON

Benjamin Kerensa announces that for the 4th consecutive year, Ubuntu Oregon and members from Ubuntu California--in cooperation with Canonical Ltd.--will have a booth at the O’Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON). Kerensa writes that this year will be especially unique since Canonical Ltd. has decided to sponsor the costs of the booth; in the past, the booth has been in the non-profit pavilion.

Passionate Japan LoCo member presented Ubuntu at Open Source Conference 2013 in Okinawa

Ubuntu Japan LoCo member Hajime Mizuno conducted an interesting video-presentation at the 2013's Open Source Conference in Okinawa. He talked about and explained Ubuntu filtered through the latest advancements and goals, including Ubuntu's converged vision that is being gradually put together and aimed at public consumption in the upcoming months. Quick and easy OpenVPN with Ubuntu

An OpenVPN Access Server is now available to be deployed with Juju. Jorge Castro details how to quickly and easily get an OpenVPN server up and running using Juju and discusses some of the current limitations and advanced options available.

Juju now available for OSX

Jorge Castro announces that Juju is now available for OS X. Mac users can now manage deployments natively. Although documentation is still being created, its use is as simple as uncompressing the tarball and running the program.

James Page: Ubuntu OpenStack SRU cadence

James Page discusses the rationale behind a recent change in Ubuntu’s OpenStack Stable Release Update (SRU) cadence. “For future OpenStack point releases the Ubuntu Server team will be following a new cadence for pushing these releases into Ubuntu. This should allow the team to test and promote a point release of OpenStack into Ubuntu within two weeks of the upstream point release. Hopefully this will allow users of OpenStack on Ubuntu to plan upgrades a little more effectively going forwards [sic].”

David Planella: Announcing the Ubuntu core apps hack days

David Planella announces the Ubuntu Core apps hack days where all interested developers are encouraged to help get the core apps for Ubuntu for phones in a ‘dogfoodable’ state. Other objectives include finding and fixing critical bugs, identifying gaps in functionality, and getting new developers involved in Core Apps and Ubuntu Touch development in general.

Jono Bacon: Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group Updates

Jono Bacon follows up on previous blog posts by confirming the founding members of the Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group (CAG) and provides updates on two new carriers who have joined, PT Smartfren Teleco and China Unicom. Jono also talks about phone manufacturers and carriers putting their own stamp not just on the outside of the phone but also on the inside and provides links for those who are interested in writing a scope to expose content and services to Ubuntu devices.

Timo Jyrinki: Latest Compiz gaming update to the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Timo Jyrinki writes that a new Compiz window manager performance update reached Ubuntu 12.04 LTS users last week. He did new runs of OpenArena at openbenchmarking.org and reported improved results.

Canonical has announced that China Unicom, which is amongst the world's largest mobile operators, has joined the Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group to shape the priorities of the Ubuntu team.
