I started using computers in 1982 programming BASIC on an Apple ][ in junior high, even spending my lunch hour typing away to make some silly ASCII art rocket ship fly off the screen. Note that this is not the ][+ or the ][c and this was way before Macs. From there I moved onto a Commodore64 where my real inner geek developed.

While I have used Windows as I muddled throughout my life and my professional career I began using Linux with Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 in January of 2008 (thanks PC Magazine!) and reawakened my inner geek. Suddenly life has meaning again.

Ubuntu Feisty was my first experience with Linux and I eagerly read and learned from wiki.ubuntu.com, Ubuntu Forums, mailing lists and blog posts. You can see a specific subset of my accomplishments during this period below in Goals Accomplished.

During Hardy I became aware of Ubuntu Studio. This was a great interest to me as a musician and I spent the next year learning about Ubuntu Studio, the associated applications, and how to make and record music on my computer. Some of the results may be heard at my RPM Challenge page.

Discovering Ubuntu Studio was a momentous and life changing event for me. After I developed modicum of competency recording my own music I began to advocate to others about Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio, which I still perform currently.

But I felt that I needed to give back in a more direct and active manner to this phenomenon that had so richly impacted my life. Therefore, during Juanty I introduced myself to the Ubuntu Studio developer team and volunteered myself to help how ever I could.

I have been modestly involved with the Ubuntu Studio developer activities since that time.

Membership Application

This section provides pertinent information about my Membership application.

Summary of Contributions

Contributions for Ubuntu have been limited primarily to advocacy. However, contributions to Ubuntu Studio have been more expansive, including answering ubuntustudio-users email, filing bug reports, creating and/or filing Main Inclusion Reports (notably for JACK), packaging for back ports, helped keep audio applications current, updating Ubuntu Studio documentation, and helped organize Ubuntu Studio developer activies.

Backports

ISO Testing

I believe it was during Karmic I started testing ISOs.
On 11/06/09 I agreed with creating a Ubuntu Studio Testers team in Launchpad
On 11/09/09 I joined the Ubuntu Studio Testers team in Launchpad
On 01/18/10 I emailed the ubuntustudio-testers mailing list to try to get involvement into developing standardized testing procedures
On 04/21/10 I emailed the -users mailing list to test the Lucid RC ISO images
On 04/27/10 I emailed the -devel mailing list and -users mailing list to remind them to test ISO images.
On 04/27/10 I emailed the -devel mailing list and -users mailing list to remind them how important it was to test the RC ISO images for release.

Rakarrack in Ubuntu Studio

On 11/22/09 I suggested replacing Creox with Rakarrack on the -devel mailing list
On 11/30/09 I contacted the developer to make sure development was robust
On 11/30/09 I followed up on the -devel mailing list after developer responded
On 11/30/09 I asked for opinions for replacing Creox with Rakarrack on the -users mailing list
rakarrack was synced from Debian and included in Ubuntu Studio Lucid

New Upstream for Hydrogen and Ardour

LV2 Application Inclusion Task

This not only included packaging and getting new applications into Ubuntu but also repacking existing applications with support for LV2 flagged.

On 11/04/09 I created an LV2 inclusion task matrix (others would also)

On 11/09/09 I filed a sync request bug for lv2core-3.0
On 11/23/09 lv2core-3.0 was synced from Debian
lv2core-3.0 included in Ubuntu Studio Lucid

On 12/24/09 I packaged zynjacku and lv2rack in my ppa for Karmic per user requests
On 12/25/09 I posted to -users mailing list about zynjacku/lv2rack in my ppa
On 12/27/09 I posted on Ubuntu Forums about zynjacku/lv2rack in my ppa
On 03/24/10 I rebuilt zynjacku/lv2rack per user request on Ubuntu Forums

On 12/27/09 I packaged zynjackku/lv2rack and updated the bug report
On 01/20/10 I uploaded zynjacku/lv2rack to REVU
On 05/10/10 zynjacku and lv2rack were synced from Debian

Coordinated with quadrispro, who as a member of Debian Multimedia will continue to package new LV2 packages for Debian from task matrix

Ubuntu Studio forum at Ubuntu Forums

On 01/23/10 I advocated for renaming the Ubuntu Studio forum at Ubuntu Forums from 'Multimedia Production' to 'Ubuntu Studio'
On 02/10/10 I was tasked with discussing renaming the Multimedia Production forum with Jussi at the developer meeting
On 02/13/10 I email Jussi directly (did not cc -devel mailing list) about rename Multimedia Production forum
On 02/24/10 (after some poking from me) Jussi emailed ubuntu-forums-council@lists.ubuntu.com about renaming the forum
On 03/03/10 John Dong replied (cc'ing ubuntu-forums-council@lists.ubuntu.com) that a name plus a description would be required
On 03/04/10 I emailed the -devel mailing list to discuss the name change and solicit input

Updating Ubuntu Studio Website

On 12/08/09 I added my suggestions to the website update page
On 01/23/10 I advocated for updating the ubuntustudio.org website
On 04/19/10 I followed up with detrate's offer to update the website during marathon IRC session lasting almost seven hours
On 04/21/10 I parsed all the pertinent information and compiled it
On 05/09/10 I created a rough site map from the compiled information which was passed onto detrate
On 05/16/10 the rough site map information was mentioned and developers encouraged to append or moderate the information as they thought fit

On 02/25/10 I filed a bug report on incorrect application entries in ubuntustudio-menu
On 03/28/10 I pushed revision #51 which included bug fixes that were never merged

Unfortantely I can't say very much about Scott's technical skills because our respective fields of interest are different. Nonetheless, he really surprised me for his presence, humility, never denying to do what is necessary for the Ubuntu Studio project. He has great organizational ability and I'm sure that, in the near future, he will also show a good job as leader. He also demonstrates good diligence in the learning process.
