Installing VirtualBox - Basic Tutorial
Introduction
The following instructions are targeted at users that haven't ever installed VirtualBox or don't have it currently installed. If you already have VirtualBox installed, you can skip to "Launching VirtualBox".
Starting Ubuntu Software Center
The easiest way to install VirtualBox is to use Ubuntu Software Center.
- Just click on the Dash, locate the Software Center icon and launch it.

Searching, Downloading and Installing VirtualBox
Use the search box at the top-right corner of Software Center window to search for VirtualBox.
- Select the correct package and click install.

Launching Virtualbox
Once the installation of VirtualBox is done, you can close Software Center.
Click on the Dash and locate VirtualBox.

Creating a new Virtual Machine
Inside VirtualBox main Window, click the icon labeled New.
- A "wizard" window will be displayed. Hit the "Next" button.

VM Name and Operating System
- Name your new Virtual Machine.
- Make sure the Operating System dropbox is set to "Linux".
- Make sure the Version dropbox is set to "Ubuntu".
- Click the "Next" button.

VM Memory
VirtualBox will automatically select some memory for your new Virtual Machine, considering how much RAM you currently have on your PC and the needs of the Ubuntu "guest" operating system.
- Normally you won't have to manually define or change this setting.
- Hit the "Next" Button.

VM Hard Disk Drive
VirtualBox will automatically select the options "Start-up Disk" and "Create new Hard Disk".
- If those options are set, hit the "Next" button.

In the next window, make sure the "VDI" option is selected. This Virtual Hard Disk type is the most usual and normally used.
- If the VDI option is selected, hit the "Next" button.

In the next window, make sure the "Dynamic" option is set.
If the "Dynamic" option is selected, hit the "Next" button.

In the next window, VirtualBox will automatically select a default location and dynamic size for the newly created Virtual Hard Disk.
- In most cases there's no need to change the default options.
- Hit the "Next" button.

- In the next window, make sure the settings recommended in this tutorial were used.
- If everything is OK, hit the "Next" button.
Back to VirtualBox main window, your new Virtual Machine is now displayed.

Adding an Ubuntu ISO as a Virtual CD/DVD in VirtualBox
- We need to adjust the Virtual Machine settings, so that it can read the Ubuntu ISO you have previously downloaded. The Virtual Machine will boot from this ISO file just as a normal PC would boot from a Ubuntu Installation CD, DVD or USB.
Select the newly created Virtual Machine and click on the "Settings" icon.

VM Storage Settings
Once inside the Virtual Machine settings, select "Storage" on the left column.
VirtualBox will display storage settings for your VM. The "IDE Controller" should be empty.

Select the "Empty" IDE COntroller, and click on the small CD-ROM icon on the top-right area of this window. Select "Choose a virtual CD/DVD Disk File".
- In the next window, navigate to the folder where you have previously saved Ubuntu ISO.
- Select the file and hit the "Open" button.

In the next window, you will see that your Ubuntu ISO is now installed under "IDE Controller".
Click "OK" to close the Virtual Machine settings and you will be back to VirtualBox main window.

Starting the Virtual Machine
Select your Virtual Machine and click the "Start" button.
- The Virtual Machine will boot and Ubuntu ISO will start loading.

Next Steps
At this point, your Virtual Machine will boot using the selected Ubuntu ISO. You'll be presented with the default installation process of Ubuntu, as well as the option to "Try" Ubuntu without installing it.
For instructions on how to install Ubuntu to this VM, any recent and correct Ubuntu installation tutorial can be used. The information and options presented on screen won't be different when installing to a Virtual Machine or to a Real Machine.
