For everyone, even those very familiar with firearm safety, please adhere to the following four rules at all times:

  1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded. Never take someone's word that, "It's not loaded."
  2. Never point the muzzle of a firearm at anything you are unwilling to destroy or kill. If you turn to look away from a target, make sure the firearm does not follow your gaze.
  3. Never put your finger on the trigger until your sights are on the target. Keep the safety on until it is ready to be fired (but even with the safety on, continue to follow rules 1 and 2).
  4. Know your target, know what is beyond it, and know what is likely to intercede between you and the target before you pull the trigger.

If these four rules are followed, accidents leading to injury (or worse) are close to impossible.
